There was a Dutch settlement called Fort Orange in what was once called Beaverwijck (now Albany, N.Y.) It was a fur-trading settlement. I had Dutch ancestors who originally settled there, and then moved to New Amsterdam.

Adriaen van der Donck traveled to that area, originally working as a law enforcement officer for the Rensselaer family. He became very friendly with the Iroquois, learned their language, traveled with them, and wrote "A Description of New Netherland (The Iroquoians and Their World)" originally published in 1655. He eventually landed in New Amsterdam as well. This book is on my Amazon wishlist.

I previously read the book: "Island At The Center Of The World" by Russell Short, which is a well-sourced book on the finding of New Amsterdam. This is where I first learned of Adriaen van der Donck's role, and the book he wrote.
