"Wm III was the one married to Mary... Dutch prince, late 17th cen."

William of Orange. Mary II was James II's daughter. They took over when Catholic James was chased out of England.

"they just said on BBC that Steve Harley died. Some musician."

Never heard of him. The group he was with was called Cockney Rebel. He was 73. I thought maybe he'd been knighted at some point, in order to have the flag at half-staff, but found nothing. He was just a simple bloke.

Just curious, why would you follow royal family news? You surely have better things to do.

That William was married to Mary the daughter of James II

James had been a Catholic so there was a search to find a suitable Protestant husband for Mary...

He was the Dutch William of Orange the the color in the Irish flag and I think theres an Orange County in NY etc...

BTW I wore orange to church today...

British Protestants dont wear green

I had a choice wear green for my Catholic 6th GGF McGinnis from County Armagh

Or do what Mum told me “We dont wear green”

:)

There’s also an Orange, Virginia which I assume is named after William of Orange. It’s not too far from James Madison’s home Montpellier.

Not that close. Though I usually stop in Orange, Virginia on the way to Williamsburg. Route 15 runs through Orange.

"Very good... and they were first cousins... William’s mother was a Stuart... sister of Charles and James..."

In Roman Catholic Medieval Europe, couples that were within a certain degree of kinship needed Papal Dispensation in order to marry. Eleanor of Aquitaine for instance, her first husband was King Louis VII of France. They needed Papal Dispensation in order to marry. They had two daughters, and when Louis needed to get rid of her, in order to find someone to have sons with, he petitioned the Pope to annul the marriage, based on the fact that they were too closely related.

Then she married Henry II, and they were required to get a Papal Dispensation as well, because their kinship was close too.

From what I understand, even though Henry VIII set himself up as the Head of the Church of England, the Church still required dispensations. Henry had to get a dispensation to marry Jane Seymour, because they were both descended from the Plantagenets.
