Iditarod Trail Racer Kills Moose in Self-Defense
AmmoLand ^ | March 11, 2022 | Dean Weingarten

Iditarod five-time champion Dallas Seavey had to kill a moose in self-defense 14 miles out of the Skwentna checkpoint. It was 1:43 a.m. when race officials were notified on March 4th.

In 2015, Dallas stated he carried a Taurus stainless .357 magnum on the Iditarod trail. In 2015, Seavey said he had to use the revolver to defend one of his dogs two years earlier. The dog still lost a leg in the attack. This year, in 2024, Dallas had to shoot a moose that was attacking his dogs in the first hundred miles of the race. It is unknown if he still had the Taurus 605SS2 or a different firearm. From gunsandammo.com:

“I carry a beat-to-death, dirty, I mean horrible-looking .357 Mag. stainless Taurus 605SS2 with a 2-inch barrel,” he said. “It’s easy to grab, it always works, and if it falls through the ice on some river and never seen again, no big deal.” Iditarod rule number 34 deals with the necessity of killing an animal in defense of self and/or the dog team.

Rule 34 — Killing of Game Animals: In the event that an edible big game animal, i.e., moose, caribou, buffalo, is killed in defense of life or property, the musher must gut the animal and report the incident to a race official at the next checkpoint. Following teams must help gut the animal when possible. No teams may pass until the animal has been gutted and the musher killing the animal has proceeded. Any other animal killed in defense of life or property must be reported to a race official, but need not be gutted.

Iditarod officials have ruled Dallas Seavey did not gut the moose properly.

Moose are big, about a thousand pounds or more. Difficult to quickly gut an animal that size.

I could understand if he was in first, but if he was in any other position, the other teams are required to stop and help. Then the musher who killed the moose still gets to leave before the helping team, although the time advantage is gone.

While I don’t know if he was in first place when he shot the moose, he won the race.

He got to Nome first, even with the two-hour penalty for not gutting it.

I know he was protecting his dogs, but it’s worth noting that his sister was also not bitten. Moose bites can be pretty nasty.

I’m just thinking about the noise of the gun.

I shot a .357 mag without ear protection and my ears had a pinging sound for the rest of the day.

My friend won a moose-hunt lottery permit in Maine

he killed a moose, had about 300 lbs of ice in his truck, and an ATV to get into the area where he shot the moose

He could only harvest, ice-down and carry out parts of the hind-quarters, and still had several hundred pounds of meat. Said it took him most of the daylight to process what he did

the rest was left for the wolves, bears and other critters

If you miss, the muzzle flash would scare your attacker to death.

“Moose are big”

And tall. I knew a guy who was photographer on call for the Anchorage newspaper in the ‘80s. This might be an urban legend, but he told of a traffic accident he had to photograph.

A very small small sports car ran broadside into a large moose crossing the road, and under the moose between the legs. It took the top off the car (maybe ragtop?), and basically decapitated the two people in the car. Gruesome.

True? IDK.

Rule 34 — Killing of Dangerous ‘Animals’: In the event that an ‘animal’, is killed in defense of life or property, the musher must gut the animal and report the incident to an official at the next checkpoint. Following persons must help gut the animal when possible. No person may pass until the animal has been gutted and the musher killing the animal has proceeded.

I modified the rule, adapting it to the lower 48.

My hearing is not good, from my childhood. Not from firearms.

But, my absolute favorite firearms is a very heavy 357 mag. SASS Pro Uberti 5-1/2” revolver. Use moderate load (8 gr Accurate no. 5 with 158gr Hornady XTP bullets) not loud, mild recoil.

I know a lot of people who say they hate to shoot .357 mag. Might be so with maximum factory load, and light short barreled gun.

I shot a friend’s short-barreled Ruger .357, loaded with hot 158 grain handloads. Dang thing’s trigger guard cracked me on the knuckle of my middle finger. Tried a tighter grip— same thing. Used a death grip on the gun and then it was tolerable. Five rounds was more than enough for me.

I would rather shoot a whole box of .44 magnum than do five more rounds with that Ruger .357.

Iditarod musher Dallas Seavey penalized for not properly gutting moose that he killed to protect his dogs

CBS News ^ | March 7, 2024

Iditarod officials on Wednesday imposed a two-hour time penalty on musher Dallas Seavey for not properly gutting the moose he killed during the race earlier this week. Race marshal Warren Palfrey convened a three-person panel of race officials to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the moose, which became tangled up with Seavey and his dog team early Monday, about 12 hours after the dayslong race officially started. One dog was injured in the encounter and flown back to Anchorage for care. On Tuesday, Dallas Seavey Racing said on social media that the injured dog, named Faloo, was in...

My Uberti (owned by Beretta) Colt replica (much improved) is mild sweet shooting pistol. The 5-1/2” barrel cuts the sound a lot and the recoil.

And it has the takedown power on the target side.

Of course you can shoot milder 38 Special loads that in it.
