House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) announced Thursday that she will not seek another term in Congress, marking an end to her tenure as one of Eastern Washington’s longest-serving representatives.
McMorris Rodgers, who has been a familiar face on Capitol Hill since her first election in 2004, expressed a desire to serve her community in new capacities.
“After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided the time has come to serve the people of Eastern Washington in new ways. I will not be running for re-election to the People’s House,” Rodgers wrote on her X account.

Bye.
Not quite. These folks aren’t thinking about Congress as a whole. They are thinking of their own position, and only their own position within the Congress. If you were a Whig in the 1850s, and didn’t care much about Slavery, and didn’t want to be a Democrat, the Republican Party would not be a welcoming home. You might join them, only to be always looked at with suspicion, and never earning respect, or you might retire.
We are looking at a Party Realignment in action. Goldwater started it, Reagan catalyzed it, Trump is working to make it stick.
RINOs abandoning ship hoping the real RATs take their seats.
Just last week she came out really hard against the activist who want to eliminate the Snake River dams. She said in part:
The truth is this process was never about getting results for endangered salmon. It was a reckless pursuit of an activist agenda – a misguided mission to tear out the dams – with no scientific data to back it up. What’s worse is the White House actively and deliberately left out the voices of those who depend on the river system most.
She’s not a fire brand. Wonder what changed her course.
That’s precisely what I’m thinking. Who’s her replacement going to be?

For a one or two seat retirement, I wouldn't be worried. Now at 20 GOP House retirements? Many here would be pleased in the long run if we thought it would help. But this increases, however slightly, the odds that the GOP will lose the House this November.
Yep, the GOP-e is trying to throw the House: they know Trump will win.
Gallager of WI, who voted against impeaching Mayorkas, accepted a high-paying DoD gig shortly afterwards, and announced his retirement from Congress.

I agree.
Solid Trump district. Just be sure a MAGA replacement takes that seat.
I thought Trump had planned on forcing the RINOs out and putting viable MAGA candidates in those Republican races. Here’s hoping his team is prepared to move on it by having vetted possible candidates in these districts represented by RINOs. I’m happy she’s retiring if she’s not on board with Trump.
GOP set a record for 2018 with something like 39 not running for reelection. In 2022 aound 32 Dems passed on reelection.
Twenty GOP not running in ‘24 isn’t a big number historically.
I think they just don’t want to be part of a Trump government or a Biden government. That plus the fact that the GOP is broke and can’t be expected to fund their campaigns this year.
Weren’t there a bunch of retirements just before the 2018 election?
Have any democrats resigned?

Having been in the salmon business for 30 years - she’s right.
Eastern Washington is where the normal people live.
It's possible they are building a firewall in case Trump wins so he cannot get anything done in congress.
