I think there are giga-gigatons of methane on the gas giant planets.
But of course zero percent of Earth’s methane comes from any source other than dead trees and dinosaurs. That’s science.
We should ramp up quickly on abiotic petroleum.
The term “fossil fuels” was coined in the early 1900’s to make fuel seem scarce and non-replenishing, thus justifying higher sales for Big Oil.
They’re called “fossil” fuels to make people think they’re scarce.

I believe academics in the scientific community developed the theory of “fossil fuels” from geological and paleontology studies which were relative new areas of study. Making the claim that oil companies purposed this is not supported. Studying the actual history of petroleum, they were groping around in the dark scientifically and simply jumping on new easy to find fields and depleting them quickly from a lack of knowledge in the late 19th century.
They were desperate to advance scientific knowledge to geology, chemistry, marketing to develop the brand new industry with the limited knowledge and tools available. Keep in mind, in the mid 19th century, laterns were using whale oil prior to the introduction of kerosene.
I’ve been saying this for years. The typical answer I get is “there’s natural gas that forms ‘naturally’, but not very much of it.”
That clearly doesn’t explain the liquid and frozen methane lakes found on the moons.

Adiabatic sourcing of petroleum, coal, natural gas always made more sense to me than the claim it was from decaying plants and animals. It never made sense to me that oil reserves 5 miles below the Gulf of Mexico was from plants and animals decaying.

Not only that, but oil has been found five miles below the surface, well below where any fossils should be. Oil is apparently the product of a huge, hot biomass under the surface of the planet. Wells that were played out in the ‘40’s are producing again. The fossils got recharged?
The idea that oil came from dinosaurs was a product if Sinclair’s marketing department. They managed to get it written into textbooks. The idea was to promote the idea that oil was rare, and they could charge more for it.
“Fossil fuel” is a misnomer. Most of the hydrocarbon wealth in the earth’s crust came not from some primordial dinosaur soup, as your fourth grade teacher told you, but from abiotic activity in the Mohorovičić discontinuity, the boundary layer between the molten interior of the earth and the cooler rocky crust that overlies it. There, carbon dioxide is a supercritical solvent that reacts with water, also a supercritical liquid that is in a state of ionization, and forms carbon-hydrogen bonds, which assemble into longer and longer hydrocarbon chains, under the heat and pressure conditions that exist there. These highly volatile hydrocarbons are driven into pockets in the upper rocky crust, forming reservoirs pf kerogen, crude petroleum, often in conjunction with methane, the simplest and most volatile hydrocarbon, and other more easily liquified gas compounds like ethane, propane and butane. When tapped into, these reservoirs gush out under tremendous pressure of these volatile gas fractions. Because the generation of these hydrocarbon compounds is ongoing, the supposedly “depleted” wells refill over time, by new product formed in the Mohorovičić discontinuity. There is no such thing as “peak oil”, and in fact, kerogen can be formed by applying heat and pressure to most forms of organic matter, in the presence of water used as a slurry, and has been done on an industrial basis.
