In the video, Jared begins by asking Luna, "What is 9 minus 3?" Luna, displaying her thinking face, receives encouragement from Jared, who assures her, "You can do it." To everyone's delight, the endearing pooch taps Jared's arm six times, indicating that her answer is 6. Jared praises her accomplishment, saying, "Good job!" Is the owner subtilely giving her a clue as to when to stop tapping?

Yup, that was Trigger’s trick, too.

Meaningless. Any dog can use ROTE MEMORIZATION for simple math facts.

...come to think of it, why is it our “Education Experts” all agree that kids cannot do the same?

(hint, I know the answer...but I’ll let others try first)

"Clever Hans the horse could do that over 100 years ago."

Clever Hans (German: der Kluge Hans; c. 1895 – c. 1916) was a horse that was claimed to have performed arithmetic and other intellectual tasks. After a formal investigation in 1907, psychologist Oskar Pfungst demonstrated that the horse was not actually performing these mental tasks, but was watching the reactions of his trainer.

Reminds me of a joke where a guy used his dog to get free drinks, with questions like, "who's the greatest home run hitter in baseball history?" Of course, the answer was "Ruth".

The bartenders quickly grew tired of them, and threw them out of the bar.

As they walked away, the dog turns to his master and says, "what did you expect me to say, Joe DiMaggio?"

Our dog, a Rotten Shepherd, showed her mettle on Thanksgiving. Due to a miscommunication between my wife and me, the front door was left open. My wife had to go back to the house about 90 minutes later, and the dog was standing in the gap left by the open door.

I don't care if she can't do math, she's plenty smart enough for me.

Could be. Dogs can read body language and facial expressions. At least, my dog can. She can read my “do you want a treat” expression and then she goes nuts. I had fun making family think she was reading my mind...lol.

That's how we learned the multiplication tables when I was in elementary school, nearly 60 years ago. In 4th grade, we were assigned 20 new words a week, writing them five times with a test on Friday.

By the end of the school year, we had a working vocabulary of 600+ words that we never forgot how to spell. That was in the CA public school system. Most of my sixth grade class tested at 12th grade reading level, too.

LOL, we were at Fort Sumter on vacation four years ago. During the presentation of the cannon batteries, the ranger said, "there were 17 batteries manned by five man squads. How many soldiers were needed for that?" I answered "85" immediately. A kid next to me asked, "how did you do that?"

And Clever Hans’s owner didn’t even know he was cuing his horse.

A good reason why a lot of police dog alerts are invalid, and subsequent searches should be inadmissible. You can’t put the K9 on the stand.

That’s the point. The dog’s doing the same thing, IMO, whether or not the owner is deliberately cuing the dog.

Yeah, it’s easy for a dog handler to train the dog to give an alert when the handler makes some innocuous gesture.

My father used to do this trick with my our dog who would bark the answers.
He would give her a dog treat when she reached the correct answer.
Addition, subtraction and even square roots resulting in single digit answers, I can remember during a visit that my uncle watched in amazement as she barked out the answer to the square root of nine.
My Dad then revealed the trick after letting my uncle gush in amazement, we all had a great laugh afterwards leaving a pretty great memory.

Dog, what's on top of a house?

Ruff!

Dog, describe sandpaper.

Ruff!

What I can’t remember I do this way. 17 x 10=170/2=85. My granddaughter used to ask me how I did math so quick. Then I taught her ‘non approved’ tricks. Now she does it too. 😂
