A SpaceX Falcon Heavy launches the Psyche mission. The orbiter mission will explore the origin of planetary cores by studying the metallic asteroid 16 Psyche. 16 Psyche is the heaviest known M-type asteroid. The mass of the payload is 2,600 kg.
Instantaneous Launch Window: October 13th at 10:19AM EDT (14:19 UTC)

Somewhere ‘out there’ is a solid gold asteroid...............................
...Nuttin’...
Exactly.
It should be called the Yukon Cornelius mission, no?
I think I remember reading once that all, or most of the gold on and in earth came from asteroids. If so, wow, that is a lot of asteroid contact in the past, but when would it have happened? We go from earth created, man created, to modern time with no record of massive asteroid impacts the world over- there have been some of course, but the amount of gold is staggering.
Gold, and all other heavy metals, is created in the heart of stars when they go supernova and their debris contents are spread over vast stellar distances.
Some aggregate and form asteroids, some form new stars and planets................
And here is the link to NASA’s direct coverage of the launch:

Thanks- I thought I was remembering right, but wasn’t sure- I have to wonder though how it got from space to earth where there is so much of it in the ground. Seems like the planet would have had to be bombarded constantly and massively to deposite that much gold, but then again, maybe only a few impacts were necessary if the asteroids contained large amounts of gold.
I know there is talk of mining on asteroids- if anyone can acc9mp,ish that, the payoff should be huge
There was a large and long bombardment of Earth in it’s early stages of solidification.
All Iron Ore deposits are leftovers from asteroid strikes. The heavier metals sank into the center of the Earth, lead, Uranium, platinum, gold, silver, etc.
The heat of the molten core is fueled by radioactive materials in close association and under tremendous pressures....................
Cool.
A large, solid gold asteroid, brought to Earth, would depress the market. Keeping it in orbit and mining is in small amounts at a time is the better choice. Plus keeping it’s existence a secret, is imperative. Just the knowledge that it exists would depress the market, although not as bad as its physical presence on Earth.
Like Debeers hoarding diamonds to keep the market stable, you would have to do the same with the gold you thought would make you rich, but in reality would make everyone else poorer................
True, good point.
