“I’m already thinking of ways for the state to acquire that land so that we can put it into workforce housing, to put it back into families, or make it open spaces in perpetuity as a memorial to the people who were lost,” Green commented amid the ruins.
“We want this to be something we remember after the pain passes as a magic place. Lahaina will rebuild. The tragedy right now is the loss of life. The buildings can be rebuilt over time, even the banyan tree may survive, but we don’t want this to become a clear space where then people from overseas just come and decide they’re gonna take it. The state will take it and preserve it first.”
Green expressed concerns over foreign investors exploiting the disaster. In another briefing, Green reinforced his dedication to safeguarding the land for locals. He shared that he discussed with the Hawaiian attorney general about “options to do a moratorium on any sales of properties that have been damaged or destroyed.”
“It’s going to be a very long time before any growth or housing can be built, so you will be pretty poorly informed if you try to steal land from our people and then build here,” he remarked, emphasizing, “I will try to allow no one from outside our state to buy any land until we get through this crisis and decide what Lahaina should be in the future.”
As reported by the Honolulu Civil Beat, the fire razed over 2,000 structures, with three-fourths being residential. The death toll is around 100, but this number is likely to increase as search operations proceed.

These native Hawaiians have been offered hundreds of millions of dollars per acre by the globalist billionaires and turned them down.
Now the globalists get to snatch it up and the native Hawaiian owners have no say.
Somebody like you, who only cares about money and the trinkets you can buy with it, wouldn’t understand.
Pineapple and Sugar cane as industries in Hawaii died a long, long time ago. Invasive weed species took over, and are a big contributor to the tinderbox characteristics of the dry side of the island.
Mismanagement and “Hawaii Time” attitudes did the rest, apparently. It seems inconceivable that people whose job it is to pay attention to such things didn’t raise concerns. Turns out, they did. There were reports issued going back several years.
But “mistakes were made” with implementation of strategies or mitigating fire risk. Too bad, so sad, we’ll try harder next time, or something. “Nobody could have foreseen this”, etc.
Not true - Oprah has land around Wailea and Kula on the west side of Maui.
TBH, Lahaina is not the kind of place billionaires want. It was a tourist town, not good for beaches, and not the prettiest area on Maui.
What Bullsh-t!
Ever owner should be able to keep the land and Insurance, the state and federal help them rebuild
The billionaire vultures including Oprah are already swooping in to buy up all that land, perhaps he whole island.
Well, it was a tourist town. Now it can be whatever billionaires want it to be.
An excuse to convert a historic town into Soviet style block apartments to suck in indigents and criminals from all over the USA and perhaps the world.
I live in Wilmington DE. Everywhere on Maui is beautiful by comparison.
No moratorium on property taxes, I'll bet.
It will all be declared “distressed” or some such and taken by the state to be redistributed to Oprah and the other interested billionaires and/or to China.
The land he’s talking about is still owned by us citizens.
Not if he has anything to say about it.
Yep. Barry and his ilk are lining up to reap the profits.
The buzzards are circling the burned corpse it seems between the gubbmint and real estate speculators.
So this arson was designed to allow government to steal land from private citizens. More criminal government.
acquire = good ol’ penny on the dollar eminent domain!
offers of a government accountant calculated “fair market value” and the one being offered the amount, either take the offer or the feds condemn the property, take it over, and the one gets nothing.
at least he is honest </s>
Warning to Larry Fink at Blackrock who bought homes (practically whole neighborhoods)after the pandemic like there was no tomorrow.

First of all, it’s unfortunate you can’t make an argument without some stupid personal insult when you know nothing about me. That’s becoming a typical FReeper habit. Second, you make it sound like I said they have to sell. I did not. I don’t think the GOVERNMENT should take away that choice from them. Defend that.
I’ve heard rumors that Larry Fink of Blackrock is there circling like a vulture, he can smell money like a vulture smells carion.
