Wendy’s Begins Replacing Workers with Artificial Intelligence – America’s Workforce is in Big Trouble
The DC Patriot ^ | May 15, 2023 | Brick Tamland

In a development straight out of a dystopian sci-fi thriller, fast food giant Wendy’s has embarked on a chilling experiment, replacing its drive-through order takers with an AI chatbot powered by Google software. This technological takeover aims to streamline the ordering process by training the AI to understand customer requests and decrease waiting times at the drive-throughs.

According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, Wendy’s is set to launch this eerie transformation in its home state of Ohio, starting with locations in Columbus. The company plans to implement the change in June, all in the name of shorter lines and faster service, as declared by Chief Executive Todd Penegor.

You mean now an AI is going to get my order wrong instead of the real person that usually does?

When AI takes over and nobody has a decent paying job, how can the economy of the country survive?

There’s no reason an AI sufficiently trained in local dialects can’t understand and be understood if the customer deviates from the King’s English. I learned decades ago there’s a skill to ordering fast food to get a correct order. Say less, not more. Keep it simple. Say “no onions” rather than “without onions,” for example.

I am misunderstood by automated message systems and digital assistance speakers far too often.

Possibly, but that would be something that hasn’t yet been shown as working as a separate piece just yet. Perhaps soon.

Automated order kiosks (non-AI), mobile apps and burger bots are already in real-world use and many are already in wide-spread deployment.

That's the easy part:

“Wendy’s Begins Replacing Workers with Artificial Intelligence”

so does that mean you don’t even need to make an order because the AIbot will take one look at you and automatically know what you want and it will make your order for you?

Phone menu systems are order takers, and they often are unable to understand, manage, and process a variety of situations.

I have avoided ChatGPT until yesterday. My wife sent me multiple lab results for my 14 year old male Jack/Rat. The numbers looked concerning, but I didn't have a good context. For drill, I threw it at GPT4. The short answer is probably kidney and liver disease and some anemia. His vet compared it top the prior test and didn't see any concerning moves to a worse state.

Later, I had a Java programming problem to solve with Google protobufs. My co-workers weren't coughing up any answers. I handed it off to ChatGPT4. The answer was reasonable, but not 100%. I resolved it on my own later this morning.

The insight was interesting, but GPT4 didn't bowl me over with a great solution for either case. I have a challenge to be the integrator of a large sensor network, and AI/ML evaluation platform and a hazard prediction platform. Everyone has their own way to do things, so I'm obliged to accommodate each one and act to translate between platforms to get the desired result. The key target is SPEED. The intent is to demonstrate an evaluation of data using AI/ML faster than the expert humans and deliver it to the troops in the field in near real time. Demo in 3 weeks. Lots to do.

I don’t know, we are in for some dark times, I fear. So many people with nothing productive to do. Idle hands are the Devil’s workshop.

I remember when the movie "Norma Rae" came out, starring the insufferable ultra liberal Sally Field. The unions came in and tried to unionize all the textile mills in North Carolina. Today there are no more textile mills in North Carolina, or anywhere in the South.

More recently, all the liberals pushed for a $15 minimum wage for fast food workers. Now we are seeing the fruits of that—eliminating fast food jobs.

Stuck on stupid.

VDOT (Virginia DOT) implemented a voice-response system on their 511 line.

One day I called it and I said “agent” (to speak to a human) in my normal northern accent. “I’m sorry, we didn’t understand you”.

I tried again. Same thing.

Finally, I got fed up and tried saying “agent” in a really exaggerated Southern accent.

It went right through.
