British journalist and racing driver Dorothy Levitt died 101 years ago on May 17 1922 with a unique catalogue of achievements.
She was the first British woman racing driver, holder of the world’s first water speed record, the women’s world land speed record holder, and an author.
She advised women drivers: Don’t be afraid of your car. Dress well. Don’t forget your gun. You can fix your own car.

Your average Brit isn’t allowed to have handguns. Much less defend themselves with it.
“Your average Brit isn’t allowed to have handguns.”
over 100 years ago ....... ????????
What a sly grin and tilt of head. Great pose!
Back when women were actually women and men were actually men!
Maybe she meant: “Don’t forget TO gun (the engine) if you want to win that race.”
“And Jet, I thought you was a little Lady Suffragette!”
P. McCartney.
That’s a thought. Of course, there were still highwaymen about in that era and a single woman driver in the lonely wilds would be a good target. So maybe she really meant “gun.”
True.
Now.
Prior to Labor's take over after WWII it was quite common for upper class and middle class Brits to own guns and shoot.
Lower class, not so much although they did have shotguns and rifles in the country. But a handgun licenses was about a weeks wages a year for a lower class man so they tended to stick with knives.
If you read British pre-WWII literature you find plenty of guns. Starting in the sixties they began to disappear and by the eighties only the police and bad guys had them. By the nineties they began to have hysterics at the sight of one.
You have to go back 80+ years to have Brits owning guns. And that was also wartime. As you say socialists disarm people. And they have. Brits have been systematically disarmed and effectively for a very long time. They readily prosecute people using what few guns they have left, defending themselves against criminals.
WHT are you talking about? They have been effectively disarmed since after the war, once socialism (ingsoc) went into full gear.
“And Jet, I thought you was a little Lady Suffragette!”
and we all chipped in for a bag of cement
