Jean Harlow was a gorgeous babe who captured America's imagination by being sexy and was OK as a comic actress later in her career.
By many accounts she was a kind and intelligent human being.
Her platinum blonde hair was falling out by career's end because of the chemicals which had given her that unique look.
She loved her domineering mother who pushed her to be a star.
She had two abortions. Is show business to blame?
She died of kidney failure.
But did a broken heart because of the abortions contribute to her I'll health?
Was this Hollywood's original sin?
When a girl got pregnant “she is staying at her aunt’s house for a while” and the baby was put up for adoption.
I think that was the teacher turned astronaut, Krista McCauliffe. She didn’t take a shower before the Challenger shuttle flight; she told her husband she’d wash up on the beach instead.
Actually it was.
lol
Plenty of illegitimate children back then. Somehow it did not kill them.
Which abortion does.
No, wait. My mistake. Krista McCauliffe told her husband before the Challenger flight.....
“You feed the dog. I’ll feed the fish.”
(Sad trombone noise)
Probably so, but given the contracts the Actors had with so called “Morality Clauses”, the studios had big investments in them and they in turn had a public image to uphold, so none of these women could have out of wedlock children if they wanted to continue working. Different rules then.
The studios back then covered up all sorts of things their actors did some of them criminal. Read up on Eddie Mannix the ultimate Fixer for MGM. If he had left a book it would have blown the doors of Hollywood on the things he did for the studio.
I’ve seen that photo before, but I swear Harlow’s boobs look bigger in this photo.
This is Jean Harlow:
Jean’s boyfriend (the great) William Powell was twenty years older than her.
Oh. Okay.
Are you serious? Or sarcastic?
Mansfield was a pianist and could speak several languages. Smart cookie.
Mansfield’s beauty pageant titles included: Miss Photoflash, Miss Magnesium Lamp, Miss Fire Prevention Week, Gas Station Queen, Miss Analgesin, Cherry Blossom Queen, Miss Third Platoon, Miss Blues Bonnet of Austin, Miss Direct Mail, Miss Electric Switch, Miss Fill-er-up, Miss Negligee, Nylon Sweater Queen, Miss One for the Road, Miss Freeway, Hot Dog Ambassador, Miss Geiger Counter, Best Dressed Woman of Theater, Miss 100% Pure Maple Syrup, Miss July Fourth, Miss Texas Tomato, Miss Standard Foods, Miss Orchid, Miss Potato Soup, Miss Lobster, Miss United Dairies, Miss Chihuahua Show, and Miss Roquefort Cheese (but she turned it down, because obviously).
Her daughter who survived the fatal crash, Mariska Hargitay, played the character, Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Sophia Loren's remarks regarding the picture I posted earlier in this thread:
Paramount had organized a party for me. All of cinema was there, it was incredible. And then comes in Jayne Mansfield, the last one to come. For me, that was when it got amazing.” She continued, “She came right for my table. She knew everyone was watching. She sat down. And now, she was barely… Listen. Look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I’m staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face you can see the fear. I’m so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow — BOOM! — and spill all over the table.”
