The only thing needed to get costs down would be to outlaw all medical insurance except catastrophic coverage. If people have to pay cash for medical care they will shop and bargain like they do for everything else. The free market works magic.
Yes you the Medicare premium goes to the MA Plan.
That is to get you to call the 800 number to talk to a broker, no one that has a MA plan gets the Medicare premium back.

You want to change the system, only option is to abolish Medicare, and that isn’t going to happen… the very article that initiated this thread shows the reality of even attempting to do that.

If medical services were less expensive, Medicare wouldn’t have a cost problem. You didn’t answer my question about the doctors cartel and hospital cartels and restrictions nurse practitioners - all of which zoom up prices. We artificially limit the number of doctors and hospitals, and force people to go to doctors for procedures and evaluations that nurse practitioners could handle. But instead of trying to break up this inflationary guild system - along with big pharmaceutical price gouging - too many GOPers talk about cutting their constituents Medicare benefits
The doctors association gets to decree how many new doctors are “needed”. and new medical schools can be built. How’s that for a medieval guild. You don’t think that drives up costs?

I have A & B and a supplemental plan through United Healthcare. I don’t pay any co-pays or deductibles. They’re covered with my higher cost plan. But, I’m with you. I never heard of Medicare paying for groceries.
That’s only gonna happen with Advantage plans through private insurers, that you’re probably paying higher premiums for, so basically, you’re probably paying for them yourself and they’re not free.
The way it works is a person eligible for medicare can opt for the government to pay his medical bills directly through traditional medicare in which case grocery provisions are not included or the person can opt to go into the medicare advantage program and select a health insurance plan from a private insurer like Aetna who pays his medical bills with the government paying most, if not all, the premium to Aetna. The primary insurers compete for the business and some offer free grocery provisions to attract medicare advantage participants to get their business.
I’m in my 40s and would gladly opt out of the program if I wasn’t taxed and they lifted some of the limitations of tax free deposits to my investment accounts. I think they should expand options to allow anyone who can afford to get out to get out.

I have a Medicare Advantage Plan. I get $150 quarterly allowance for OTC products, a free Fitbit, 2 free dental visits a year, a few other perks. I agree with the other posters that much of this could be eliminated.

I've long thought the medical market was deliberately manipulated by government and the membership to keep prices artificially high. It's effectively a monopoly the government condones.

Hold on there, whipperstapper. Unfortunately, that whole “opt out” thing isn’t going to work for us old people because you’re paying OUR social security.
So let them reinvest it elsewhere. Why should my future be held hostage? Governments before I was even conceived started the theft. Am I to be held to account for the rest of my life for the sins of our fathers?
