FReepers may recall some discussions of a case in Moab, UT around the time of the Gabby Petito murder investigation. A lesbian couple were found deceased from shotgun injuries in a remote campsite near Moab, UT. At the time there was some speculation that Petito's male companion Brian Laundrie could have been involved. It turned out otherwise. The link provided explains that police tracked down a former co-worker of one of the victims, who had already committed suicide in Iowa when the investigation located his last known whereabouts. Details in the link.
She was “bossy” toward him at the McDonald’s they both worked at, so he killed her and her partner.
The suspected murderer committed suicide with the same rounds, and had worked at same place as one of the victims, and had had anger over her manner.
Hornady doesn’t seem to manufacture the 12 gauge round in the red cap version of the Critical Defense ammo. I believe they are mixing up the pistol rounds with the 12 gauge, which is also called Critical Defense but it’s a 00 buck round.

“Pinkusiewicz had committed suicide in a motel room on Sept. 24. He used a Ruger Magnum Revolver with Hornady 38 Special Critical Defense rounds—the unusual type of ammunition also used in the murders.”
Translation?
Ruger 357 mag pistol (style not revealed) shooting 38 Special Critical Defense rounds. (possibly to prevent collateral damage for close up threats.)
If the rest of the description is correct, this is probable round.

Most people who reload know Hornady for their innovative bullets and loaded ammo.
As far as I am concerned there is nothing unusual about the ammo. Their FTX series bullets are well know, I use them to reload 30-30 rifle ammo.
For pistol loads I prefer Hornady’s XTP series bullets.

The only thing I see in the Critical Defense series of Hornady bullets that looks unusual, is their 410 shotgun load.’

My personal favorite.

Pinkusiewicz left Moab on Aug. 24 and went to Waterloo, where he reconnected with a man investigators called his “significant other,” though information from Pinkusiewicz’s cell phone indicated that the relationship was “up and down.”
Cell phone tracking and bad/no relationships with women.
As others have stated, if cell phone tracking is good enough for LE, then it is good enough for 2000 Mules
And I still know enough to understand that men need good women in their lives.
“used an unusual brand of ammunition called Hornady Critical Defense rounds,”
What’s unusual about them? I use them in my 9MMs.
Yes, I’ve shot a few hundred rounds of pistol caliber Critical Defense. The article says that the two victims damage from a shotgun. The original story said that also.
158 gr?
200 grain in .45 ACP.
125 grain in .38/.357.
Not sure about .44. I’d have to look. Haven’t loaded those in a while.
I don’t shoot 9mm.

How about that. I missed the part about shotgun and saw the part deeper in the story:
State crime lab analysts were able to narrow down the weapon most
likely used in the crime to two possibilities: a Glock 17 or Glock
19 9mm handgun.
Thanks.
I don’t own a .45, they are to be respected.
