The suspected murderer committed suicide with the same rounds, and had worked at same place as one of the victims, and had had anger over her manner.
Hornady doesn’t seem to manufacture the 12 gauge round in the red cap version of the Critical Defense ammo. I believe they are mixing up the pistol rounds with the 12 gauge, which is also called Critical Defense but it’s a 00 buck round.

“Pinkusiewicz had committed suicide in a motel room on Sept. 24. He used a Ruger Magnum Revolver with Hornady 38 Special Critical Defense rounds—the unusual type of ammunition also used in the murders.”
Translation?
Ruger 357 mag pistol (style not revealed) shooting 38 Special Critical Defense rounds. (possibly to prevent collateral damage for close up threats.)
If the rest of the description is correct, this is probable round.

Most people who reload know Hornady for their innovative bullets and loaded ammo.
As far as I am concerned there is nothing unusual about the ammo. Their FTX series bullets are well know, I use them to reload 30-30 rifle ammo.
For pistol loads I prefer Hornady’s XTP series bullets.

The only thing I see in the Critical Defense series of Hornady bullets that looks unusual, is their 410 shotgun load.’

“used an unusual brand of ammunition called Hornady Critical Defense rounds,”
What’s unusual about them? I use them in my 9MMs.
