As Democrats ramp up gun control, a supermajority in U.S. think gun ownership good for society

Democrats with ambitions of broad gun control in the United States face a major stumbling block in their efforts to enact those policies: American voters themselves.

Gun rights remain broadly popular in the United States, even after years of Democratic efforts to turn high-profile mass shootings into major gun control initiatives.

A long history of gun ownership, coupled with robust constitutional protections for firearm ownership here, have led to one of the largest private gun stocks in the world.

The enduring popularity of guns in the U.S. was underscored by a recent RMG Research poll conducted by Scott Rasmussenone that earlier this month found some support for new gun laws among voters  but far more overwhelming favorability toward gun rights.

More than six out of every 10 voters "would prefer to live in a community where people are allowed to own guns," the polling found, while more than 70% said "there are positive benefits to allowing private gun ownership."

Demographic breakdowns show the vast majority of Republicans agreeing with those sentiments, yet even Democrats feel favorable toward gun rights in the responses, with Democratic respondents evenly split on the former question and agreeing with the latter by nearly 60%.

Notably, those numbers are up from an earlier survey conducted in September, which found just under 60% of respondents were comfortable living in a community with private gun ownership.

An ongoing positive view of gun ownership throughout the country hasn't stopped Democratic efforts to enact stricter gun control over the years. For decades federal, state and local efforts have focused on restricting both gun ownership in general and classes of weapons available for gun owners in particular.

REAL reform against “gun violence”?

Begin about age twelve or so, with introducing the ENTIRE school age population to firearms, up close and with the intention of demystifying the “magic” power of guns. Expand this into the care, feeding, grooming and proper respect for the potential of the devices, and follow up with training in the selection of target, framing the target, and firing upon the target, all with the express purpose of doing this under controlled conditions. Once the familiarity with the weapons is established, then work on developing skills in accuracy and the correct procedures to prepare for the recoil, aiming, and firing, followed by whatever procedures are necessary to load the next round into the chamber. Repeat the aim, firing and reload until these are second nature, all the while sharpening up the accuracy.

This would have twofold effect - the guns just become another fact of life, like electricity and automobiles, a useful tool and with its own purposes. Also, it would be obvious quite quickly which of the learners, whether through carelessness, or those that harbor malicious thoughts, are the ones who should NEVER come into possession of a weapon. Then the perpetually timid, who cannot be compelled to pick up a weapon under any circumstances, even after attempts to familiarize them, should still be given training in how to avoid, evade, shelter in place, or somehow distract the active shooter, so it may be possible to make a concerted effort to neutralize or otherwise disarm the shooter.

And to have their Social Security number tattooed somewhere on their bodies, so they may be identified from among the fallen later on.

Upon graduation from high school, and with the certificate of training in their possession, the youth are then eligible to take ownership and possession of their personal firearm. None of this business about waiting until age 21, or 25, or whatever. Adulthood implies the capability for adult responsibilities.

And on the longer term, the military forces shall have a MUCH larger pool of potential recruits in the future, all with the basic knowledge of firearms, and a large civilian population that stands ready to resist any internal or external invasion - “You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.”

Make it so, Number One.

Exactly. I figure if somebody is coming at you with a knife and you’re unarmed, the cops find defensive wounds on your corpse. If you have a gun, they find defensive wounds on his corpse. The second way is better.

Gun control is about control not about guns.

We’ve been cowards so far but now is the time for Americans to stand up to the FAR-LEFT Nazi gun grabbers. We’re going to have to jerk their chains to “rewoke” their goat-smellin’, commie asses and convince them that this country belongs to us, not a bunch of sewer-dwelling politicians.

...a supermajority in U.S. think gun ownership good for society

That supermajority is going to have to VOTE that belief as a single issue come election time, or sit and wait for the FIBs to kick in their doors.

The thing about Americans is, once support for anything gets down to about 70%, we’re just one TV show away from 30%.

Dems have been trying to disarm people since before the Civil War. At first they were satisfied with just disarming slaves so they couldn’t overthrow their slave masters. Now they want to disarm everyone so they can’t overthrow an oppressive government.

Considering how our elections are going, I don’t think a supermajority is that much of an impediment to these people.

IF that “super majority” isn’t willing to do what is necessary to stop the super minority from imposing control at the ballot box there is only one box left to use. Seems they aren’t ready for either. Not pretty but pretty simple.
