Barbara Walters, trailblazing TV icon, dies at 93

Barbara Walters, the trailblazing television news broadcaster and longtime ABC News anchor and correspondent who shattered the glass ceiling and became a dominant force in an industry once dominated by men, has died. She was 93.

Walters joined ABC News in 1976, becoming the first female anchor on an evening news program. Three years later, she became a co-host of "20/20," and in 1997, she launched "The View." In a career that spanned five decades, Walters won 12 Emmy awards, 11 of those while at ABC News.

She made her final appearance as a co-host of "The View" in 2014, but remained an executive producer of the show and continued to do some interviews and specials for ABC News.

"I do not want to appear on another program or climb another mountain," she said at the time. "I want instead to sit on a sunny field and admire the very gifted women -- and OK, some men too -- who will be taking my place."

Last year I was re-watching the movie "The Last Detail" with Jack Nicholson, and they have a scene where they pass a building in which had a bunch of people doing chanting (A very early Seventies thing) and when they went inside, one of the chanting people caught my eye, and I thought "That's...thats...that's Gilda Radner!

I love watching movies and seeing someone just pop up. I was watching the movie "No Time For Sergeants", and they were flying in a B-25. I saw the co-pilot, and thought "That's...thats...that's Corporal Klinger from M.A.S.H.! (Jaimie Farr)

I loved Gilda Radner. Her whole thing with "Judy Miller" on SNL just makes me grin thinking of it...this sketch...just brilliant!

One of her first TV appearances, in 1965 with Ed McMahon in a Citgo commercial when they changed their name from Cities Service. That brand new 65 Impala convertible was like the one my uncle bought.

No.

Her leaving it made it a better place.

Was she a reporter or a narrator? What big story did she break? Did she just interview people and help those on the left get their message across, and put barriers in place to hinder those on the right getting their message across? She was on TV a lot during a time when there were limited choices. In today’s celebrity worship culture, I guess that is important.

She did news coverage but her main job was as you say, an interviewer. She got the ‘big fish.’ I think it was in many ways a status thing... powerful men and women were more likely to accept an interview with her because it connoted that they were ‘somebody.’
