Get well soon, Mark!
The quote in your Tagline is spot-on!
I remember once on one of those ‘challenge Steyn’ email sessions someone was questioning whether he did the shows in England. Mark went on and on about the picture behind him which was clearly of Big Ben.. he made quite a point that day of saying he was in London... or was it tongue in cheek? I do know most of his in studio guests are London based...
Many thanks!
I’d forgotten about his old website.
Fun listening...
Oh my gosh!! Prayers for Mark’s quick and complete recovery!! Holy Father, we need this man!
Prayers for Mark ….
Ditto. He is probably my favorite contemporary pundit.
“I think he is only influential among the semi-snobbish intellectual wing of conservatism, and then only to provide validation.”
And I think you’d be wrong.
Perhaps his humor and sarcasm are lost on you.
Me? I enjoy them. As I have always enjoyed reading Mark Twain, and H.L. Mencken, and Dorothy Parker, and P.J. O’Rourke, and...well, you get the picture. Did I always agree with them politically? Nope. But I enjoyed the way they presented their arguments, as entertainment.
You and me both
Praying for Mark. Please keep us posted.
Yes he is often there. But sometimes in other places
Nonsense.
Watch him and Farage in the Munk debates

Watch it to the end to see how they won
Prayers for him.
Prayers for full recovery.
I think you missed my entire point about Steyn. I respect the man and I respect his intelligence and way with words. I simply don’t think he is as effective an influence in the general sense as others with a less intellectual style. He can provide any intellectual heft needed to shore up conservative thinking, but he cannot, as well, influence the average person, the modern average person, of course, being a pseudo ADHD-afflicted meathead. In this regard, I think that Nigel Farage has a far more effective style of communication and can be almost equally effective in an intellectual environment, such as your Munk debates, or with the man on the street.
If you watch the audience responses, even in such a small subset of the population who are probably self-selected for academic tendencies, you’ll see that the response to Steyn, even when he makes a brilliant point, is often lackluster, almost as if most of the audience didn’t fully grasp the significance, whereas the quebecoise nutbag and Farage tended to get much more enthusiastic responses.
“Nope, not at all, though I suspect my analogy was lost on you. But I also happen to like classical music.”
No, your analogy wasn’t lost on me at all. I just think it was a weak analogy. You said, “Steyn’s musings are like trying to feed teenagers classical music when they want to listen to rock and roll.”
Steyn’s product is criticism, and criticism is at its most effective when it is wrapped as entertainment (that’s why Mark Twain was so beloved). Entertainment is associated with pleasure. And one is more apt to understand and remember something that was pleasant. Someone who does not grasp Steyn’s sarcasm will still understand who and what he is criticizing, though they won’t grasp the entertainment of his delivery. So, pretty much everyone will get his message, though not everyone will be entertained with how it is presented.
You said that Steyn would only appeal to the “semi-snobbish intellectual wing of conservatism.”
If you are a conservative, you wouldn’t find Steyn’s MESSAGE snobbish. So, it has to be how he delivers that message that disagrees with you. Is it the humor and sarcasm that you find distasteful? And, if one does not find it distasteful, but actually finds it entertaining, how does that make one a “semi-snobbish intellectual?”
I don’t know if you’ve ever read Twain, who was the master of humor and sarcasm. I think, from what you have posted, that you would conclude that Twain would only appeal to semi-snobbish intellectuals.
BTW, I, too, like classical music; in fact, probably half of all the music I listen to falls under that genre. The philistines among us would no doubt call be a “snobbish intellectual” for my preference for classical music. They would label you similarly.
Prayers for a speedy recovery...
Yes, I would too. He is too young for this to happen. I am guessing clotshots although you can get transference of the spike proteins. Maybe a political hit job, the Trudeau people HATE him with a burning passion.
