I raise my hand to being downright snobbish about Mark Steyn and other pundits in his intellectual orbit. I just plain like to listen to minds that have different ways of expressing similar thoughts or takes on anything interesting. I do not need validating, or excuses, for liking a Steyn person whom I may or may not always agree with. Just listening to a really smart, clever, witty, amusing, person is a treat and enjoyable in itself. All of us influence others throughout our lives, knowingly or not, but not everybody has the ability to express themselves in palatable ways that fit particular situations. Mark Steyn is an original thinker and I am so glad he is on the conservative side of history.I pray that Mark gets well and knows that he is appreciated by so many snobbish inclined fans.

So, it has to be how he delivers that message that disagrees with you. Is it the humor and sarcasm that you find distasteful?

I don't find anything about Steyn distasteful. Never said I did. I simply said that his style will be less influential than other styles of communication. Most people are not like me, and, most likely, not like you.

I think, from what you have posted, that you would conclude that Twain would only appeal to semi-snobbish intellectuals.

This couldn't be more wrong. Twain's style was EXACTLY targeted toward the common folk, not the intelligentsia. If you were to use a writer as an analogy for Steyn, a better pick might be William Faulkner. A great writer, but a much harder read, and therefore lesser known than Twain.

I disagree entirely. Faulkner and Steyn are almost polar opposites in style. There is very little humor or sarcasm in anything Faulker ever wrote, except, perhaps, for “The Rievers.” Yet, I enjoy reading Faulkner, because his style is somewhat unique, and it works for him and his storytelling.

And Faulkner is not all that “lesser known” than Twain. And that is probably more true today than in the past, since Twain has been banned from much of the school curricula, whereas Faulkner hasn’t.

I think the trouble some people have with Faulkner is that they don’t have the requisite attention span or stamina to read him. Sentences that go on for two pages are exhausting for some people; but they are not reading them properly. They are used to — or prefer — short sound bites, or something more akin to the style of Hammett or Hemingway: Short, concise sentences, somewhat similar to a news article. They seek brevity, when the story calls for something much more.

“This couldn’t be more wrong. Twain’s style was EXACTLY targeted toward the common folk, not the intelligentsia.”

Yeah, well; the “common folk” of yesterday would be the intelligentsia of today, because our schools have so dumbed-down education that anything much beyond a meme or a comic book would be considered highbrow.

On this we agree completely.
