The biggest reason Trump's attack on DeSantis was a mistake
Hot Air ^ | November 7, 2022 | DAVID STROM

I have made no secret of the fact that I think Ron DeSantis is an extraordinary politician. I prefer him to any of the potential candidates for President, and am willing to explain to anybody why that is. This, though, is not that column.

I also am no Never-Trumper, and would vote for him over any Democrat in a heartbeat. Trump has a lot to be proud of, and without his leadership the Republicans would still be captured by the Establishment™.

Now that I have put my biases on the table, let me give you my analysis of what I believe to be Trump’s huge own goal.

My most objective take possible, given my acknowledged preferences, is that President Trump made a big unforced error attacking DeSantis at his rally the other day.

Not just because he did so just before an election day on which the Republicans simply must destroy the Democrats–after all, Governor DeSantis doesn’t need Trump’s support to win. If Trump went into full attack mode it wouldn’t dent DeSantis’ reputation one little bit.

So Trump’s attack is electorally irrelevant (which in itself is an unforced error, as it shows Trump to be weaker than he wants to look against a political rival).

Trump’s attack was a mistake because he opened up an old wound that could be Trump’s Achilles’ Heel: his huge mistakes dealing with COVID. Mistakes that DeSantis saw early and rejected quickly.

I didn’t see Trump’s remark to be an “attack” on De Santis, just a jab. I believe that jab was precipitated by De Santis endorsing Joe O’Dea in the senate race in Colorado. O’Dea has gone on record stating that he will do everything he can to prevent Trump from getting the nomination in 2024. Then there was the rather cringy ad saying “God made Ron”. One of De Santis’ biggest donors also opposes Trump and has been working with McCarthy and probably McConnell to bring the gop back to the Bush Glory Days.

Trump should have left this for private discussion between himself and De Santis. In politics there is always disagreements, and this should be seen as just another disagreement between two big names in the same party.

My hope is that De Santis rejects all those who seem to be using him to block Trumpism and return to Bushism.

For the sake of his administration on Day one DeSantis needs to fire everyone he legally can, take their clearance and facility access away and escort them out.

What does your “flashback” have to do with the headline topic?

The author is engaging in revisionist history here.

The only governor in the entire U.S. who didn't impose any lockdowns was Kristi Noem of South Dakota. Everyone else -- including DeSantis imposed variations of lockdowns, restrictions, etc.

I wouldn't necessarily blame any of those governors, but when DeSantis and his sycophants run around today acting like he was a champion of freedom and liberty during the COVID fiasco, they are full of sh!t.

DeSantis has become the better candidate for 2024.

No, he hasn't.

Comparatively speaking, DeSantis is dead broke and has no future in politics unless he functions as a stooge for the big money behind the Republican establishment. Some of us voted for Trump in 2016 because that's exactly what we are trying to purge from U.S. politics.

Pence.

And, you’re right about that.

Pence and FRAUDci go way back (look up PepFar).

They’re both traitorous pieces of Fauci.

Too bad Trump never recognized the wisdom of Reagan’s 11th Commandment: do not attack a fellow Republican.

( except during GOP primaries)

Trump could have keep his mocking of DeSantis in the pocket at least until after 8 November. He got no respect from me for his poor timing. And not the first time. And yes, he is dug deep into the hole created by his advisor Fauci and Big Pharma on the beautiful vaxx. The only redemption there “ well, at least he’s not a democrat”

Well-said. He's again taking bad advice from trusted advisors.

I'll say it again. We need to be honest. Trump was a great President, helped make America great again, stopped Hillary, and lots of other magnificent things.

But seriously, Trump's Achilles is his personnel instincts. They're a virtual dumpster fire. Sessions, the Mooch, Bolton, Tillersn, Mattis, Giuliani, McCabe, Nikki Haley, Sally Yates, Flynn, Hope Hicks, Reince Priebus, Rod Rosenstein. Oh, and Pence...and endorsing McCarthy. And PA and Alabama primary nonsense.

And this is not an inconsequential Achilles. Indeed, picking Rudy to lead the stolen election charge was a disaster. He may have been America's Mayor but he was out of his league when arguing cases. In fact he was by many accounts hung over and that's why his hair dye was trickling down his face. Maybe that deck was stacked against him, but our "ace" pitcher had no heat and the skipper kept him on the mound out of loyalty.

Ignoring a problem won't make it go away, and this is a big problem. Re-electing Trump is tough enough, but I don't want to spend four years crossing my fingers on him selecting competent pit bulls to administer MAGA.

That would be Deborah Birx...

The Clearest Account Yet of How Trump’s Team Botched the Pandemic

She is remarkably candid about how she and her colleagues manipulated Trump into the initial 15-day shutdown in March, and then its 30-day extension, which he almost immediately regretted.

She brags about it in her book...and in fact wanted an indefinite lockdown, but could not call it a lockdown for political reasons.

You can see the mess we re in because the Election was stolen. If President Trump were still in Office, none of the crap happening would be happening now. The Biden Family would be considerably poorer. And the worshipers of George Soros and Lying Joe Biden would be caterwauling like a bunch of cats in heat on a fence.

It was a term of endearment.

No, it wasn't. It was mean and vindictive, and reeked of jealousy. That was the impression of some of my friends who were at that rally, and they didn't like it one bit.

And apparently others didn't either, which is why Trump backed off yesterday.

Trump has backed off on yesterday’s attack on Ron DeSantis, telling the crowd to re-elect him as the governor of Florida.

DeSanctimonious. Lamest of all Trump’s bestowed monikers. If he was going to bother, he should’ve come up with a better one.

The mans career is filled with supposed unforced errors but here we are.... debating whether Trump will President again. Results are all that matter. He has a track record of success. He always has that to lean on and he does. The Presidency is his if he wants it. I believe the rumor is DeSantis wont run if Trump does. This obviously emboldens Trump. So expect more of this nonsense but in the end its harmless. Theyre grown men. I think they both know the deal.

He also campaigned early for Mastriano when it counted not the last week of the election cycle. Trump could have helped with money early on for attack ads against the WOlf Henchman and lockdown enforcer, religious leader arrester Josh shapiro.

As for the “two weeks,” Trump never, ever argued for a mandatory vax.

Oh yeah?

Trump's endorsement of vaccines aligns with most Republicans' views -- but it may be an uphill battle to convince the holdouts

DeSantis wasn’t perfect on Covid but he was pretty good. It helps that local sheriffs refused to enforce some of the restrictions.

I will say this. In a county that leans strongly Republican, where the police didn’t enforce masking, where most of the stores didn’t enforce it, where the governor didn’t enforce it either, it was depressing to see almost everyone masking up. For a long time I would be the only one without a mask, then it was one or two others… For me, that was depressing. No one ever harassed me like you would see in other states, but still…

The restrictions ended here before they did in most of the rest of the country, and once he made up his mind to push back, he has been pretty firm. But you’re right. Florida wasn’t South Dakota.
