At this point, the United States has sent more than $17 billion in cash and military aid to Ukraine for that nation’s fight against the Russians. The United States has been far and away the largest, most generous patron of Ukraine’s government of any of the allies who are supporting this effort. But this has dragged on for quite a while now and it is long past time to begin seriously discussing the obvious question. How long are we supposed to keep this up? In fairly short order, the money we’ve sent to Ukraine will more than double the annual budget for the FBI. We’ve already given Ukraine more than five times the amount of aid we give to Israel each year, one of our closest and most important allies and one that exists in close proximity to multiple states that publicly proclaim their intention to drive them into the sea.
With all of that in mind, you are not a “pawn of Vladimir Putin” if you ask the government to explain what the long-term plan is and how much longer this will be sapping our resources and provoking our adversaries. The world is spiraling out of control at the moment and our continued firehose of advanced weapons and cash into Ukraine which they use to attack the Russians isn’t exactly enhancing our prospects of stability. Over at Defense One, analyst Erik Swabb takes a crack at this question and arrives at a depressing conclusion. In his opinion, even if the war ends or at least winds down to smaller and more infrequent skirmishes, we will need to continue funding Ukraine’s government and military forces for at least the next decade and potentially much longer. He begins by admitting that it is “fair” to ask this question.

“Restore Ukraine as a nuclear power”
________________
Are you going to send your grandkids to war? .... or other Americans kids.
“Analyst” Eric Swabb is insane.
As if one Germany was not enough.
“I honestly don’t care about either country.
We have enough domestic issues to address.”
I agree, which is why I want an armistice & negotiated settlement ASAP.
However,global interventionist types disagree:
“The war must go on until we free Crimea” is their battle cry.
We’ve gotta drive the orks out of the Ukrainian Shire or we lose democracy.(Sarcasm)
That’s the whole point… how else do you think the American oligarchs and the MIC make their bank?
No, the Soviet Union had nukes stationed there. The nukes weren’t Russia’s, they belonged to the Soviet Union. As in, the Union that Russia was JOINTLY in.
Any Soviet Union asset under the care of the Ukrainian Soviet, if left inside Ukrainian territory at the start of independence, de-facto became Ukraine’s asset.
This really isn’t hard to understand. It’s like “fixtures and fittings” when buying a house.
Upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the nukes on Ukrainian soil became Ukraine’s to dispose of as they saw fit. In fact, because Ukraine sought to join the NPT it had an undertaking AND a target date for dismantling the nuclear weapons was set for the end of 1994.
If they didn’t own the nukes, how could they be legally responsible for decommissioning them especially when they had no means to do so?!
So when they signed the Minsk Agreement on December 30, 1991, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan all agreed that the Russian government would be “given charge” of all nuclear armaments. Not ownership, but the power to maintain and use those weapons. In fact that agreement even said the nukes could stay on Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan soil (but with a veto on launch if Russia chose to use them).
Again - how could they have a veto if they didn’t own the assets? The whole point of this argument was for Russia to deal with the maintenance, and act as a security guarantor.
The Budapest Memorandum came about to resolve the issue that Russia wanted all those nukes back under its direct control on its own soil and wanted Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan to lose their veto on use. At which point they quite rightly said “you ain’t getting that without a massive quid pro quo.”
The Budapest Memorandum is meaningless and your tone is that of an asshole.
The other countries didn’t have the power to create nukes nor launch the ones in their countries. Thus not nuclear powers.

Take your radiation meds government just ordered and shut your mouth. Our Democracy!
Coming up soon: “Democrat submits a proposal to make the Ukraine America’s 51st state or perhaps our next territory. Reporters stunned!”
Success! The Ukrainian Parliament should vote themselves another 70% raise on the U.S. dime.
This means that we have to sacrifice the future of our country.
We are already a-hole deep in debt by $31 trillion.
No, that is just the tv version.
.
Ask the Republicans, they’re openly saying no amount us too much, and they don’t care about the cost (for Ukraine).
The Debt is going to destroy this country - and all they do is join with Idiot Joe Biden to spend on everything and anything. Like Lindsey Graham told the FBi Director hours before they launched the approvals to Raid Trump - just give me a number, you’ll get it.
The very same Republicans wouldn’t spend $20 Billion on Trump’s Wall due to fiscal restraint. They’ve sent Trillions to Dem Mayors and spent almost that much to support Covid Vaccine Mandates and Tracking databases.
It’s sad, but it’s the Truth.
A thinking person has to think this is why they wanted Biden in there. And when he got in there, they signed off on bill after bill and Appointee after Appointee.
.
Only a couple of brave Kentuckians (Thomas Massie and Rand Paul) seem to take issue with the never-ending blank check our government is giving to Ukraine, the rest of the federal GOP politicians are basically right there with Joe Biden in sending them billions and billions of U.S. tax dollars (while previously having said $5 billion for the border wall is too expensive.)
Duh. It wouldn’t be a good war if it were over quickly.
NO!!!!
We’ll vote out every idiot supporting this Endless War crap.
WE’RE BROKE!!!!
I would say the amount they state is not even close to the reality.

It would behoove Russia to continue the war with Ukraine without conquering it so that it can lead the US into bankruptcy because of its support of Ukraine, knowing full well that Ukraine can never pay off its debt to the US.Russia is destroying the US using Ukraine as proxy.
