Today the NY Times published an interview with a woman named Dea Bridge who advertises herself as a conservative therapist in Colorado. The first half of the podcast falls into what I would call the “Gorillas in the Mist” style of interview. Host Meghan Daum is asking questions about the boundaries of conservative therapy which seem to assume the worst about Bridge.

Daum: In my world, I know a lot of people who were so distressed about the election of Trump that they had to go on anxiety medication. They couldn’t sleep. It dominated their lives, their goals, their thoughts, their relationships, their conversations for four years and even to this day.
Bridge: That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Why would you let one person in the world control your life? Are you that weak?

I will say that similarly, Obama’s term in office took a toll on me. I didn’t let that snarky putz dominate my life like these leftists are saying Trump did, but I came out of that 8 years with a lot more gray hair and worry lines.

Conservatives believe in individual responsibility and accountability. As a consequence I think it is questionable whether there is such a thing unless it is a civilian version of a drill sergeant. Your brain going haywire is your responsibility. Stop drinking, exercise, disconnect from stressors - like CNN or twitter or maybe even FR - and connect to people.

This one hit home because I have an acquaintance who actually said this in front of me, at which point, I chuckled. She still doesn’t understand why I laughed at that.
She’s 84, and really going downhill mentally, so I’ve cut her some slack.

A lot of us were deeply concerned and even downright angry about Obama’s agenda, but we didn’t become psychotic and certifiable.

It’s not only weak, it’s that for many people (like a certain family member) they knew they were always right and good, while you were always wrong and bad - the TV told them so - and until the election of Trump they never had to confront the possibility of otherwise.
