Some of those folks (I don't know your source) strain for such an interpretation because they are trying to push John the Baptist and Our Lord as being vegetarians. This of course forces them to elevate Gnostic Gospels over the real thing (e.g. Gospel of the Ebionites). They have to drop the fishes from the food multiplication. Interpret Christ's making Apostles into "fishers of men" into a command to quit fishing. I suppose they also don't like the part where the Resurrected Christ COOKS fish for the Apostles (I always wondered how it tasted). The Last Supper as a Passover Meal has to go away, too. I don't know what they do with the Fatted Calf story.
