Best Grip or Skaters Tape You Have Used?

As I near 70, no matter how much I exercise, my grip has become weaker, and this is a problem for consistently pulling pocket knives, small flashlights and small pepper spray out of my pants pocket with 2-3 fingers.

I carry them on a Pocket Shield. A bit expensive, but IMHO worth it.

(Belt carry isn't legal, and too problematic where I live, and yes I am working to move...)

I noticed that I have less trouble with a larger flashlight that has aggressive knurling, but that light is realistically too large and too heavy for daily pocket carry).

Was thinking about adding strips of grip tape to the sides of the top ends of each individual pocket tool, to make it easier to finger-grip, and consistently and cleanly extract them as needed.

I have looked online and the consensus seems to be the tape doesn't stay on that long (though no one specifically mentions how long), but given the low cost of the tape, if I got a few weeks of help from it and then had to re-apply more tape, maybe its worth it?

Any thoughts / product suggestions appreciated, especially if you have used grip tape or other product for a similar issue.

FRegards...

Grip strength is often an outgrowth of nerve function, since it is farther from the CNS, it shows deficiency first. I would experiment with supplements, and go in to get B12 tested by the doc. Sometimes a deficiency of something can be behind that, like pernicious anemia. And I would experiment with Amino Acids too, in addition to B vitamins. Glutamine, Citruline, Taurine, Arginine, and Branch Chains can sometimes get deficient in older people, because as you get older the body stops making them for some reason and if you do not consume it you end up deficient.

In short, I would want to know why that grip strength was weak, more than I would want a hack to work around it.

Noticed my grip strength diminishing...used a Grip Master Hand Strengthener occasionally for a few weeks. I was surprised at the result. My grip strength did increase (for opening jars) and finger strength increased when playing guitar.

As pastor for 44 years, too many times sadly I have seen old people move to a one-story house and be dead within a year. Can’t climb stairs? Quit exercising completely and watch what happens. I think the real answer BTC and I really feel for you is all of the above advice and comments and thanks for posting this and thanks so much especially AnonConserv for pointing this out about nerve function.

Everyone, Anyone, if you wish to stay out of the old folks home longer, (1) do your squats every day. Being unable to squat for the toilet has caused more people to lose independence than anything.

If you wish to stay out of the home longer, (2) do balance exercises. Stand on one foot as long as you can then on the other. Go for 60 seconds on each foot. “Oww my ankles can’t do that.” It’s not your ankles it’s your balance.

If you want to stay out on your own and get around independently, (3) do calf raises. Watch the old people in Wal-Mart. They shuffle along because their calves are so weak. I have struggled against psoriatic arthritis for forty years, and I have learned that if the muscles are kept strong, then I can still function in spite of the inflammation. Mine gets better with exercise.

Yes, get the tape, but still practice drawing without the tape.
Yes get the one story but do a stair climber at the gym!
My hands and fingers are really bad with arthritis, so I play guitar/banjo every day. It really works.

Also, eat more protein. We need more as we get older, since it’s harder to build muscle.

The health gurus say at least one gram of protein per pound of your ideal weight.

Or, try for 30% of your total calories from protein.

Looking at the 3M and Milwaukee Adhesive versions now, trying to balance the strongest adhesive for small strips vs not too thick on the item being taped. Thx!

“Have you thought about putting them in a tourist pouch that hangs around your neck?”

Yes thx, also sometimes use a fanny pack, but IMHO the former too easy to get choked with, the latter begging to have grabbed.

Thx, wondering if Talon grips are any more “grippy” than 3M or other stair or skate purposed tapes.

That is phenomenal wrapping, thx for the link, I have bookmarked it.

I have done a fishtail on an inexpensive scale-less fixed blade, and like it. My only concern for this project is that I need the belt clips on all of these EDC tools to still function in order to attach them to the Pocket Shield, and the wrap would get in the way (the belt clips attach at /near the top of each tool.) The rod wrap looks thinner, thx! And thx for the reminder about McMaster, a good source!
