Best Grip or Skaters Tape You Have Used?
08/01/22 | Bterclinger

As I near 70, no matter how much I exercise, my grip has become weaker, and this is a problem for consistently pulling pocket knives, small flashlights and small pepper spray out of my pants pocket with 2-3 fingers.

I carry them on a Pocket Shield. A bit expensive, but IMHO worth it.

(Belt carry isn't legal, and too problematic where I live, and yes I am working to move...)

I noticed that I have less trouble with a larger flashlight that has aggressive knurling, but that light is realistically too large and too heavy for daily pocket carry).

Was thinking about adding strips of grip tape to the sides of the top ends of each individual pocket tool, to make it easier to finger-grip, and consistently and cleanly extract them as needed.

I have looked online and the consensus seems to be the tape doesn't stay on that long (though no one specifically mentions how long), but given the low cost of the tape, if I got a few weeks of help from it and then had to re-apply more tape, maybe its worth it?

Any thoughts / product suggestions appreciated, especially if you have used grip tape or other product for a similar issue.

FRegards...

I can understand why you didn’t Google “best skaters tape”. All you get are links Tonya Harding’s wedding night.

I remember it well. In about 1965 we were hearing about these things called skateboards that kids were using in California. Every boy immediately swiped one of his sister’s roller skates and nailed or screwed the halves to whatever board he could scrounge.

Shortly afterward, ready-made skateboards started to show up in stores. The first ones I saw (Roller Derby #10 and #20, I think) had metal wheels, and then they all had clay wheels for years before the softer composites came out. Still plenty of homemade skateboards being used well into the 70s.

I haven’t been on a skateboard in over 40 years now, and not likely to be again, either.

Another option is what I do to some of my EDC pocket gear. I will wrap (or whip if you prefer) it with string. Got in to the habit on many boring ‘stakes’ in my younger days. I don’t like grip tape because eventually it will pull off on the corners. I use braided nylon mason’s string. I have had it on some of my flashlights and canoe paddles over 30 years in some cases.

Otherwise anything from 3M will be of high quality with good ‘sticky stuff’. Look on McMaster dot com (mcmaster Carr) for the good stuff in small quantities.

I’ve used kettlebells since dragondoor introduced them to America 16 years ago.

I use them every week to this day… and the farmers carry is great for the core and grip.

I’m pretty sure the one I pictured is one of the “manufactured” skateboards with metal wheels. The homemade ones with broken down skates where a lot rougher. Man did I bust my butt a lot.

Everyone’s hand grip weakens as they age. Even with attempts to maintain it.

Yes, it will never be as strong as it naturally was in youth.

That said, if you do not actively use and challenge it, you lose it more rapidly.

Hes still actively using it.

He asked for advice to help him get things out of his pocket quicker, something he could grip his hand around better.

It’s been a very long time, but that might be a Roller Derby #20 with the paint worn off. The shape is similar to what I remember.

And now I’m going to quit hijacking this thread. Sorry about that, BTerclinger.

I highly recommend Talon Grips:

https://talongungrips.com/

They have grips for particular weapons, phones, DIY kits - you need it, they have it. You can choose between rubberized grips, skateboard-type grips, or a hybrid.

Some suggestions:

- If you want a soft grip that is also robust and won’t slip, consider using “cork gel” bicycle tape. Additional adhesive required, although I just used a bit on the ends and wrapped tightly.

- Stingray skin is not very expensive and is the same stuff ye historical samurai used (underneath the silk or cotton wrap) for their swords. Don’t get ‘polished’ as that’s where the grippy nodules have been sanded down - great for wallets, terrible for adhesion.

- On a more modern note, the “Talon Grip” handgun grip people sell just plain rectangles of their material too.

Maybe use tape that is used for tennis racket grips.

For improving your grip, one good thing is to start hanging from a pullup bar for time.
