70,000 truck owner-operators in California may be forced to stop driving in one week due to new state law

A Supreme Court decision may force over 70,000 truck owner-operators in California to stop driving, creating another choke point in the already stressed West Coast logistics networks.

The AB5 law restricts the use of independent contractors and will soon be enforced against the trucking industry after the court declined to hear their appeal.

The California Trucking Association said in a statement that gasoline has been poured on the fire that is the ongoing supply chain crisis, and the decision by the Supreme Court could deny a judicial review of a lower court ruling.

In an end-of-term orders list released in June, the Supreme Court denied the review of the 9th Circuit’s reversal of the injunction against enforcement of the AB5, which is against the state’s trucking industry. This injunction, which has been in place for over two years, will be lifted quickly.

“Interesting definition of freedom.”

You’ll never get it.
When I owned that truck I decided what company I pulled for.
I decided if I wanted to run particular routes, what cities I would/wouldn’t deliver to.
I decided when I took my home time.
I decided how long I would take for home time.
I decided how much fuel I would buy and where I would buy it.
Same with tires and truck repairs.
And this is just a short list.

If a company didn’t meet my expectations I could pull their DOT numbers off my truck and go elsewhere.
That’s freedom.

It seems like you wouldn't be affected by this law since you worked jobs for multiple companies.

It will only impact those "independent" truckers that have decided to be dependent on one company for their income.

With all the crap going on in California, his priority is to mess with DeSantis?

I'm in Florida. If his ads get some of the California libs to move back, I'm fine with that.

This started because the taxi industry did not want competition by Uber and others. So they bribed the democrats.

No, I was only contracted to one company at any time. BUT, I could take my ball and go home any time I wanted to. There are a great many independent owner operators who go through the process of getting all the permits, licenses, plates and insurances to operate under their own authority. A look at the beginning...

A good place for anyone wanting to look at the business from an owner operators point of view.

AB5 eliminated independent contractors in all businesses in California, not just trucking.

The AB5 law restricts the use of independent contractors.

The dock workers union has been fighting them for a long time wonder who got the money?.
