Kathy Barnette and the Pennsylvania primary

In February 2022, I attended the Republican State Committee Meeting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Our job, as state committee members, was to interview, vet, select, and support endorsed candidates through the primary and election cycles.

This election cycle, for the first time in decades, the top three positions for governor, lieutenant governor, and Senate in Pennsylvania are "open seats." An open seat is when no incumbent is running, due to term limits or resignations. Open seats always draw more candidates. But this cycle, we Republican state committee members were called upon to complete the endorsement process for approximately 30 candidates, running for the three top open seats.

For a number of reasons — multiple multi-millionaire candidates willing to go the distance self-funded, the unlikelihood of any candidate dropping out, the specter of endorsed candidates rejected by the primary voters — State Committee participants made the very rare decision not to endorse.

Wrongly, the general sentiment was that multiple candidates, lagging in the polls, would drop out. They haven't.

Because the Republicans and Democrats battled over redistricting until mid-March, thereby truncating the legal petition signing from three weeks to ten days, the general sentiment was that multiple candidates wouldn't be able to obtain the requisite petition signatures to appear on the ballot and would be forced to drop out. That didn't happen, either.

Thus, unless the 30-something candidates had been previously vetted on other aspects of their respective lives, the normal vetting process did not occur, due to the exigent time restrictions and the sheer number of candidates.

Ms. Kathy Barnette, who is running for the U.S. Senate, ran two years ago for a different position. She lost mightily. Much has been made of the canceling and then reinstating of Barnette's political website.

Probably not - the poster has a history of making false claims, then when it is pointed out, runs from the discussion, indicating it was a smear and not a mistake.

Conservative98 doesn’t back up his claims...

Just keeps repeating the same old innuendos.

Those who bear false witness...

We will be accountable to ALMIGHTY GOD for every word we speak.

"Bro, who are you favoring, if you don't mind me asking?"

Thanks for asking.
I'm a loyal Trumper and would go with his pick, Dr. Oz.
Some of the others might seem more conservative, or even more loyal to Trump, but in the end, PA is a quirky state and electability is as important as anything else.

Oddly enough though, last minute change of plans and so I won't be home Tuesday to vote -- will be in Missouri!
So Pennsylvanians will just have to do the right thing without me! ;-)

For years Republicans have been ignoring the advantages of crossover votes from Democrats. By nominating a Black Woman the party would gain a large chunk of voters it would not otherwise have gotten.

The additional benefit of this is that once people have broken through the barrier of voting "Republican", they will likely be more inclined to do so again in the future.

I think Kathy would do surprisingly well in the General, and I think a whole lot of people who normally vote Democrat would cross over just to support her.

But I respect your position on Oz.

Okay this has already been posted, but I’ll respond again:

“Ms. Kathy Barnette, who is running for the U.S. Senate, ran two years ago for a different position. She lost mightily. “

Yes she lost, but she ACTUALLY OUTPERFORMED DJT IN HER DIRSTRICT (PA-4) BY AROUND 10% BETTER!

This is just the establishment doing what the establishment does when the peons rebel and don’t follow their plans...

Establishment had decreed McCormick or OZ (preferably Oz) from the start.. They both spent about 30 Million each over the last 5 months or so to try to convince the Republican voters that they are NOT what they actually are (a wall street bush republican and a complete total fraud who’s openly supported things like gun control, transgenderism for children and other things) but are actually good old fashioned america first folks....

And, NO ONE WAS BUYING IT, not from either of them... the race has been the two of them sitting around 20% the entire time... Barnette in the meantime was criss crossing the state talking to anyone who would listen, on a platform of America First and articulating it well... But no money meant most folks had no idea who she was... but she kept hustling.

Then the debates happened, and the electorate who wasn’t buying what Oz or McCormick was selling saw something they actually liked... and the race was on.

Since then the establishment has been throwing everything and the kitchen sink at Barnette trying to beat the unwashed masses back onto their plantation...

We find out tomorrow if they are successful or not.

Make no mistake folks, if Barnette pulls this off, this will be as big, if not bigger, middle finger to the establishment GOP of PA than Trump was to the National GOP establishment in 16.

The electability argument is a non starter...

DJT wasn’t electable in 2016..

That’s the argument that folks fall back on when they know their candidate is poor.. and OZ and McCormick are poor...

and this idea that they are electable is absolute garbage.

Oz and McCormick have spent a total of 60 Million combined to both be sitting around 20% the entire election cycle... and that’s among purely republican voters... If that doesn’t tell you how AWEFUL they both are nothing will.

This foolish notion that you can plop Oz or McCormick down in the T, in rural and small town PA and get them to excite those voters, is foolish. Especially against Fetterman.

Only way OZ or MCCormick beat Fetterman is if the D brand is so damaged by Biden and the Economy that a ham sandwich would win as long as it has an R by its name.

Nothing, NOTHING about either of those two is going to excite and motivate the blue collar voters in this state... I have not met a single GOP voter in person who honestly is motivated and excited to vote for Oz, not one, and every single independent I speak to laughs outloud at the very idea that Oz could beat Fetterman.

The establishment are working under the false assumption that the GOP base will turn out solidly for any candidate equally, and that Oz’s celebrity will win enough suburban low information housewife voters that they can pull off a win....

This is a false premise. Oz turns off a large amount of the GOP base, and the disenfranchised voters who showed up in 16 and 20 to vote for Trump are not going to for Oz or McCormick.

I’ve said this since long before Barnette was being mentioned, if either one of them (oz or mccormick) is the nominee don’t be surprised in the least if the Dems take this seat.

Well... I'm not certain how "establishment" Trump is, and his picks do have a good track record for victories, even against what the polls predicted.
And Pennsylvanians often elect alleged Republicans only to learn later they were anything but.
At least with a Trump pick, there should be a measure of loyalty to keep Oz on the straight & narrow.

As for the other major contenders, I'm fine with them if they win, and I appreciate DiogenesLamp's views above on Barnette.
Of course, there's a lot of cr*p being thrown around about her too..

I have noticed that they appear to have the long knives out for her.

That's often a good sign that a candidate is regarded as an enemy by establishment Washington.
