Why does today’s left have such a problem with free speech? That’s kinda like asking why fascists have such a problem with free speech. The question answers itself.
Because true free speech means you fight for the right for ALL speech to be free. That terrifies them & says everything about who they truly are.
The Left regards speech as dangerous because that’s what they intend to use it for.

Correct, in the arena of ideas, their ideas lose out. Obama’s ideas polled horribly. A majority were under 50% and most significantly lower. If they were attached to Obama’s face, the pendulum swung back and people agreed with them. If they have a fair and equal debate, they lose. They have never had to defend their positions so they can’t. They just divert and attack.
It’s not just freedom of speech, it’s anything pertaining to liberty, autonomy, self-determination, or self-defense. They do not view people as sovereign individuals, but rather as wards of The State, which dispenses out privileges only to the minimal extent possible.
Because their delusional and radical beliefs collapse under the weight of free and open debate.
