The quick and dirty version for latecomers: China’s biggest city undertook what was supposed to a brief, temporary lockdown last week to stem an outbreak of Omicron. Half the city would shut down for five days and undergo mass testing, then the other half would do the same. Those testing positive would be whisked away to centralized quarantine to prevent them from infecting others. That was supposed to uproot most of the viral vectors in Shanghai; if anyone tested positive after that, they could be contained via “targeted” lockdowns of their apartment complex or neighborhood.
It hasn’t worked out. Today the city is reporting more than 20,000 positive tests, a record high. The brief, temporary lockdown has become indefinite. Because the entire population is stuck at home, there’s no way to get food except via delivery. And because everyone is ordering delivery, the odds that you’ll be lucky enough to land in the queue are slim.
People are starving and claustrophobic and there’s no end in sight, of necessity. On the one hand, China can’t afford to lift restrictions. Its health-care system can’t cope with the likely number of infections and deaths if the virus were to spread freely, and Xi Jinping won’t want to admit that his “zero COVID” policy was in error at a moment when he’s up for a third term as president. On the other hand, China can’t afford not to lift restrictions. Unrest in the city is growing and the Chinese economy needs Shanghai, a financial powerhouse, to be back online.

Just stupid.
They need to focus on only old people. Omicron is a bad cold in virtually all cases. Let the virus run in the younger population if it has to and they get immunity. Cocoon the older people and focus on getting food/meds to them. Far less stress on the whole society.
But Communists never think like that. It’s always sterile, mass force involving intimidation of everyone.
They’ve been Shanghaied!
Fauci is making an “O Face”.
Some think this treatment of Shanghai has more to do with Xi asserting himself over what he sees as a stronghold of his predecessor and opposition Jiang Zimen, using Covid as an excuse. Sounds familiar to me.
Duplicate comment from another Shanghai thread earlier today.
“Cue the Shanghai fear pron videos of hazmat suited chicoms spraying down the streets with disinfectant, bodies stacked three high on hospital gurneys, crews welding apartment doors shut and dogs and cats living together.
Perhaps we will see some reruns from season 1 in Wuhan.”
This is what happens when people do not know true freedom. Unfortunately, several generations have been raised in America that do no know true freedom. Those that can remember those days are too old to do much about it other than talk to deaf ears.
That’s likely the real story...
If an American citizens went off on Fed.gov Covid-fascists like the man in the video, CNN would be calling them insurrectionists or traitors, and be talking about locking them up - just like in China.
All people guilty of social media sins will get a positive COVID test. Positive COVID tests will go to quarantine facilities. Those in quarantine facilities will not come home
They’re only making it look like covid to build up military for the Taiwan invasion
I can’t imagine life without going to a nearby takee-outee. Riots are coming. Soon.
The point no one is discussing is that China has followed their zero Covid approach, relying completely on lockdowns and their “vaccines”.
Well, Sinovac partnered with Pfizer on their vax, meaning it has almost zero or even negative immunity for the recipients. Since lockdowns were their other measure, almost no one in China has any natural immunities to Covid - they’ve been without exposure all this time.
China will NEVER reach herd immunity to Covid.
My in laws are currently in lockdown in Shanghai - they stocked up on food, just not sure they got enough.
Good luck to them. I hope it doesn’t deteriorate further.
Thank you- they can’t say much about what’s going on.
China will eventually give up and allow covid-19 spread like wildfire.
