How Will I Teach My Grandchildren What Is Right When I Was Wrong So Often? By Cory Franklin
“Everything I was sure, or was taught to be sure, was impossible has happened” — Winston Churchill
Looking back now, I ask myself: How could I have been so wrong about so many things?
I was wrong about: Patriotism and love for your country, no matter what its faults.
In grade school, I learned the famous quotation, “My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.” That was the appropriate quote, not the abbreviated jingoistic version “my country right or wrong” that people often like to mock. In high school, I learned Sir Walter Scott’s poem that begins, “Breathes there the man, with soul so dead, Who never to himself hath said, This is my own, my native land!” But that was then. A recent poll showed that more than 50% of Democrats and 25% of Republicans said they would not defend our country if it was attacked.
I must have learned the wrong lesson about patriotism. I am sorry for my error.
I was wrong about: Fair play.
I believed the sine qua non of athletic competition was fair play. Fair rules do not guarantee a preordained victor, and without fair rules, sports were not really competition but just another spectacle. Now, however, someone with a man’s body, strength and athleticism can swim against women. And in interviews, that swimmer demonstrates an utter disregard for any semblance of fairness. Doesn’t care. And his coach and the governing bodies of the sport don’t care either.
I was wrong about fair play, and I apologize.
I was wrong about: Stealing...........

"I was wrong about: Virtues such as humility, modesty, and character.
I learned in school learned in school that these were the values children and adults were supposed to emulate. But we elected as president Donald Trump, who is basically the antithesis of these values. Then we elected Joe Biden, who, despite what the media and his partisans say, is not much different than Trump, just not as nakedly self-centered and bombastic.
If such men could be elected president, I was wrong again."

I suppose this did not really need a bar full… The author is right on many of the things, he just happens to be very very very very wrong on very key thing… Trump.
I get where he’s coming from, but he is “anti-Trumpism” ruins an otherwise okay article.
I suppose what he is trying to capture, is something I am suffering from as well… Disillusionment and alienation.
I feel like I am on a Lee shore, , and my anchor is dragging.
No bar full, barf alert. Damn spell check.
When a man can admit he is wrong that many times, I can understand him being wrong about being wrong every time.
Maybe Mr. Franklin will someday realize he is wrong about President Trump before he dies.
What you have now is “wisdom”, which is gained solely by making mistakes. But don’t fret it, they won’t listen to you even though you gained your knowledge the hard way.
Let’s hope he does figure out he was wrong about Trump. Trump was good for this country.
His other points were fine.
I have repeatedly posted:
It's not so much what you don't know that will get you in trouble, it's what you know that ain't so.
~ Mark Twain
Few seem to ever respond with understanding. People get what they deserve because they will NOT listen. Not my problem any more.
“Few seem to ever respond with understanding. People get what they deserve because they will NOT listen. Not my problem any more.”
Thank you
I am so tired of this line of thinking. Who cares if Trump is “self-centered and bombastic”? That isn’t what matters. It’s like saying a Ferrari is a lousy sports car because you don’t like the paint color. Does it affect the car’s performance? No. And neither does Trump’s personality change the fact that the country was in a far, far better place with him in the White House. And speaking of his personality, do you actually know it? Have you ever met him and spoken to him in person?
Stop bitching about his “personality”, because it is irrelevant. RESULTS matter, unless you’re a democrat. Judge a man by his actions, not your emotional reaction to his “bombastic” style.
The real question is:
What type of world will your great grandchildren be living in
100 yrs or so from now? Change is ever evolving but at much
more rapid pace than in the past.
Just look at the change from 1492 when Columbus sailed the
ocean blue until today. In a little over 500 years this land is
nothing like what it was back then. As fast as the change is
coming just think what could be the normal in the year 2100.
That is only a life span away.
President Biden IS NOT “not that much different than PRESIDENT TRUMP.” PRESIDENT TRUMP IS NOT a demented, thieving far left pedophie.
The barf alert that is missing here is for the posters who bought this authored garbage
“Patriotism and love for your country, no matter what its faults.”
We didn’t. We learned the constitution. What faults is he babbling about?
The democrats got us into viet nam. It was questionably unconstitutional. It was undeclared- a White House war. No one will ever investigate LBJ
This guy talks about stealing with no mention of a subject or object. Just the concept. No hint of Biden?
And posters here say he makes good points.
“Then we elected Joe Biden, who, despite what the media and his partisans say, is not much different than Trump, just not as nakedly self-centered and bombastic.“
No one elected Biden.
“ President Biden IS NOT “not that much different than PRESIDENT TRUMP.” PRESIDENT TRUMP IS NOT a demented, thieving far left pedophie.”
What?
Biden works for foreign agents and foreign states. Not even friendly ones.
For decades I have steered away from even buying Chinese as the have for as long as I know listed as a enemy by the State Dept. Trump was getting us out of being forced to give them our money
Trump and Biden are similar?
This guy might be a favorite for Tge confused person who lives to be told what to do and is now reeling, holding his ears to prevent truth, but he has no idea what he is talking about.
“Maybe Mr. Franklin will someday realize he
is wrong about President Trump before he dies.”
