Russia’s recent decision to halt fertilizer exports could have a devastating impact on Brazil, an agriculture powerhouse that imports more than 85 percent of its fertilizer demand.
According to Bloomberg, Russia is Brazil’s top supplier of fertilizer. And Belarus, one of Russia’s allies, provides 28 percent of Brazil’s fertilizer imports.
Before the invasion of Ukraine, fertilizer costs were already high due to inflation. Moscow’s protectionism following the invasion made it that much worse, depriving countries like Brazil of the nutrients they need to grow all kinds of farm goods.
“No other nation in the world relies on foreign fertilizer (more) than Brazil,” reported Zero Hedge.
Brazil has a plan in place to stop relying on Russian fertilizer, but that will not be complete until 2050.

Brazil is not already in harvest mode?
I thought Brazil and Russia were pals.
I love the name of the page. Starvation News! The only trusted source in news today!
Do you really think you’ll get more mileage with MSNBC on the truth highway?
This is laughable. Brazil could make up for the difference overnight. It’s a flipping cornucopia for fertilizer AND food.
This article was written by a mathematically declined author. If Russia supplies 85% of Brazil’s fertilizer demand, and Belarus another 28%, why, that’s 113% right there, not including domestic production and all other imports.
Soon your poop will be quite valuable.
Brazil imports 85%, not 85% from Russia, and 28% of that 85% comes from Belarus.
Ok, thanks.

I like Zero Hedge. The reader comments there are a hoot. But Zero Hedge has a subtle pro-Russian slant to it. It’s always been that way. So any article that quotes ZH is a bit suspect to me.
Of course, your mileage may vary.
That’s not what the article said.
It said it imports 85% of the fertilizer it uses
No problem.
“Starvation News” cites Zero Hedge as a reliable source. No more need be said…
“Brazil imports 95% of its nitrogen fertilizers, and Russia is the leading supplier, accounting for 21% of the amount imported, followed by China, Qatar, and Algeria (see Figure 1). In 2020, Brazil produced 224,000 tons of nitrogen fertilizers, which met slightly more than 4% of the country´s demand.”

So 20% comes from Russia.
Go Brandon!
They are definitely economic partners. Russia had already severely limited these exports for six months back in November. From Fertilizer Daily 11/4/21
“Chairman of the Russian government Mikhail Mishustin announced the six-months limitation of exports of two groups of mineral fertilizers from Russia to prevent the rise in food prices.”
Even before the sanctions world wide fertilizer importers were in bad shape for 2022. One thing for sure, Brazil will get access before Kansas or Saskatchewan farmers do.
Brazil’s climate lends itself to two crops of corn. The second crop is just coming on. But note that most fertilizer has already been applied.
It’s next year that’s the danger. This year will be expensive but OK.
Russia To Provide Brazil With Nuclear Power Plants & Fertilizer per an agreement inked by Putin and Bolsonaro on February 16 2022 when Bolsonaro travelled to Moscow.
“Soon your poop will be quite valuable.”
Tell that to my wife.
