OROVADA, Nev. — Max Wilbert, standing on a hill overlooking a wide plain of brush and farmland, walks over to a black banner that’s grabbed a lot of media attention.
In blood-red letters, the banner reads, “Lithium Lies.”
Here in Nevada, activists like Wilbert are fighting against the largest lithium mine set for development in the United States. The mine is in the final stages of permits, and the lithium pulled from the ground here could fuel batteries for electric vehicles sold in the United States.
But the grassroots movement against the project has been torn apart over an unrelated but volatile issue: transgender rights.
Two of the lead activists — Wilbert and fellow protester Will Falk — are part of a self-described “radical environmental” group, Deep Green Resistance, whose goal is to dismantle industrial civilization to save the planet.
But beyond its environmental agenda, Deep Green Resistance also identifies as a “radical feminist organization.” This means, for example, that members oppose opening up women-only spaces like bathrooms to transgender women, whom the group’s website refers to as “people born male.”
The anti-transgender stance has blown up the grassroots alliances that once stood together against the Nevada mine project, known as Thacker Pass. Environmental and Indigenous activists from the region say DGR’s positions on transgender and nonbinary people are discriminatory, and they distanced themselves from Wilbert and Falk.
People of Red Mountain, an Indigenous group challenging the mine in court, recently severed its relationship with Falk, who was acting as its attorney. A spokesperson for the group specifically cited Deep Green Resistance’s views on transgender people as the reason for parting ways.

If you are an environmentalist, you want to live in harmony with nature. However, there are people who don’t like some particular parts of nature....

Reminds me of the Sierra Clubbers who opposed illegal immigration because of the harm it did to the desert. They were cancelled.
When the plan of the billionaires to winnow the chaff that clutters their personal pleasure planet [The Great Reset] comes to fruition, these clowns on both sides of this will be the first ones against the wall.
Lol. They all want us to drive around in electric cars, but at the same time don’t want us to mine the lithium that charge the cars.
How does it help us? We should be driving a thicker wedge into these fissures.
So the issues with Falk relate to peter?
The danger is in mining for lithium to power electric cars that will save the planet from mining for coal that could power industry, or drilling for oil that runs cars. Say what you will, but carbon is plant food. If you want a greener world, choose coal and oil..... THANK YOU.

I used to support the Sierra Club.
Ironically, it was HUNTERS and RURAL RANCHERS who started conservation. It is only common sense to keep some land aside for game and wild animals.
If I lived in that area, I might oppose a foreign-owned mining operation - esp lithium. In which case I would try to make friends with all the eco-freak people I could.
In this story, the eco-freaks turn on each other in classic throw-down style!
I find myself mostly on the side of the eco-freaks here. Donald Trump’s presidency oversaw the exportation of billions of $$$ worth of natural resources. We do not need foreign interests portioning out our USA.
This would make a great comedy TV series. I’d be sure to pop the popcorn for it.
