Video Shows Virginia Elementary School Having Class Outside In Below-Freezing Temperatures Surrounded By Snow

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia – The actions of one elementary school in Virginia has many parents asking questions and wanting to ensure that their children are safe and warm after a video surfaced that shows children having class in the freezing temperatures.

The Fairfax County Parents Association took to Twitter to post a video that shows young children sitting outside of Waynewood Elementary, surrounded by snow, in below-freezing temperatures while a teacher is reading to them and pointing to a book she is holding up.

“It’s well below freezing in Fairfax County, yet young children are having storytime on the cold concrete outside at @waynewoodes. This is the result of poor leadership and confusing guidance to teachers. Get these little ones inside!” the association wrote.

In an emailed statement, FCPS’s Kathleen Miller Media Outreach Specialist wrote, “This morning on Twitter, an anonymous parent group posted a video that was taken outside of Waynewood Elementary School in Alexandria. In the video, a group of third-grade students are taking a snack and mask break in front of the school. The weather conditions were monitored, and the students were outside for less than seven minutes. The teacher was reading a story to keep the students entertained. Students do go outside for mask and snack breaks in cold weather, but that time is limited.”

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! This was at a Fairfax, VA school this morning. It was 24 degrees out this morning. ENOUGH pic.twitter.com/lGYKLg145v — Steve Oatley (Host of Wake Up America) (@steveoatley) January 11, 2022

Also attached to the tweet is a screenshot of the current conditions at that location. The temperature is a balmy 27 degrees and the wind chill is 19 degrees.

The children are seated on concrete and in the shade.

When the temperature drops below freezing, young children are at risk for exposure complications.

According to the CDC “when exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Prolonged exposure to cold will eventually use up your body’s stored energy. The result is hypothermia or abnormally low body temperature. A body temperature that is too low affects the brain, making the victim unable to think clearly or move well. This makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because a person may not know it is happening and will not be able to do anything about it.”

Citizen Stringer reached out to the elementary school for comment and was told that we could talk to the principal only to have a person come on the line minutes later and direct us to another department and would not answer any further questions.

We also reached out to several administrative personnel by email but have yet to hear back.

The important question is why? Being outside in freezing temps for short periods, if properly dressed, is not a big deal. Parents, are your kids properly dressed for school? If they were in sub-zero wind chill or not properly dressed or in freezing temps for more than 30 or 40 minutes, then I could see being upset. Looks like it was not windy and they were in the sun. Being outdoors is actually good for most kids. Not sure I see the problem here.

The teacher wants to go back to her cushy “remote learning” gig and is punishing the kids because she’s not getting her way.

I guess since they were so excited about using all that covid cash to bump their salaries, they forgot to pay the heat bill.

Sounds like the kids were having a snack and mask break. Maybe being outside is the only place they are allowed to remove masks? So maybe the teacher was giving them a break. I am not sure it was child abuse.

So:

1. Parents get angry when the schools are closed.

2. Parents get angry when the schools are open.

3. Parents expect the schools to coddle their children’ special needs.

4. Parents expect their teachers to “lay off” their kids.

5. Parents expect schools to confirm to the diversity mandate du jour.

6. Parents have something important to say about restroom signs.

7. Parents won’t allow teachers to discipline kids.

8. Parents get angry when teachers don’t discipline their kids.

9. Parents expect schools to educate their children.

10. Parents won’t even educate their own children.

11. Parents get upset when kids are kept inside.

12. Parents are furious when kids are outside...

We are a nation filled with illiterate dependent immoral wussies

and I’m starting to think we deserve our sick public schools.

Meh - kids at Eielson AFB hike to school on base at -40F - no buss service.

Dress your kid for the weather or home school.

The government’s children are none of our business,,,

Government schools have the training and skills to raise, mold, and indoctrinate the government’s children...

Troublemakers beware that the new FBI’s domestic terrorism unit which will take actions, at 3 A.M., against any further complaints by the peasants who happened to birth the children...

Pfffft. The children are all wearing hats and gloves, they’re fine. If I were their age I would be much happier being outside than stuck in some stinking school.

I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment. I'd further add that it's probably good for kids to get a little instruction on handling the extreme weather.

I don't live in the north and can't attest to it. But I'd say it may be a real life education kids there need to know like a lot of us wish schools taught kids to apply math to real world situations like budgeting and paying bills and such. That kind of thing is probably a lot more important than yet another lesson on blaming Christians for the STD's among gays, or blaming whites for crimes committed by blacks.

If it were a recess break where the kids could play and run around on the school playground, that’d be all right in my eyes. We had recess with snow on the ground when I was in school. But we didn’t sit around on concrete in the shade.
