U.S. health regulators on Wednesday authorized the first pill against COVID-19, a Pfizer drug that Americans will be able to take at home to head off the worst effects of the virus.
The oral drug, Paxlovid, is a faster, cheaper way to treat early COVID-19 infections, though initial supplies will be extremely limited. All of the previously authorized drugs against the disease require an IV or an injection.
An antiviral pill from Merck also is expected to soon win authorization. But Pfizer's drug is all but certain to be the preferred option because of its mild side effects and superior effectiveness, including a nearly 90% reduction in hospitalizations and deaths among patients most likely to get severe disease.
The efficacy is high, the side effects are low and it's oral. It checks all the boxes," said Dr. Gregory Poland of the Mayo Clinic. "You're looking at a 90% decreased risk of hospitalization and death in a high-risk group -- that's stunning."

The "purest brand" they recommended cost about $600 a year.
I eat fish...and other foods with that Vitamin...ahhh...imagine real food instead of a damn pill.
$500 for a 25 cent pill.
Just an excessively expensive 3CL protease inhibitor. They claim even though ivermectin inhibits the same protease, it requires a higher and potentially risky dose to get similar inhibition. But we don’t know the long term effects of this drug, so who’s to say which is safer? Anyway there’s much safer (and cheaper) herbs that also inhibit 3CL protease. This is just another big pharma scam and money grab. I’m high risk myself and easily made it though covid by employing alternative treatments.

it’s probably both mixed together.
If you are in fact a doctor, my guess is that you are not a very bright one.
This is welcome news. I just hope this will be available to anyone to help take this disease.
90% reduction... cheap... safe and effective!
I heard it even has electrolytes.
I’m in!!!!
Your article seems to actually prove what you claim it disproves. The chemicals in the two drugs are very similar, perhaps identical, so they are making a big deal about the dosage. Many times I’ve heard proponents of Ivermectin say that the tests which claim Ivermectin’s inefficacy use far too low of a dose.
Wow. That’s an erudite response. I find that people who wield useless insults are generally not smart enough to understand the argument presented. So why don’t you tell me what i said that is factually inaccurate.
Of course you won’t be able to, but it is rather fun to see people like you flail with cut and paste and trying to convince yourself that you actually know something.
Ritonavir “boosting” has been used in HIV medicine since 1996.
A side-effect of ritonavir is that it blocks hepatic metabolism of certain drugs - in this case, of the primary antiviral.
A dose sufficient to stop the virus without the ritonavir boost is too large to tolerate when taken by mouth.
Oh. An herbalist. Got it.
You really are an idiot.
The unproven Paxlovid's only known side effect is, it makes your mouth water when a bell rings.
Yes, me too!
The big advantage I see immediately is that a pill would cut the risk of inexperienced healthcare personnel applying the vaccines improperly. The incorrect application of the vaccines has been identified as a major problem leading to patients reacting to the inoculation.
I think it was handled the way they wanted it handled. The whole thing was run very effectively in my opinion.
I remember how the vax was rolled out. First there was not enough, oh, everyone wanted some. But the authorities had to ration it only to the most vulnerable! Some rascals fibbed a little to sneak a dose and get theirs!
There were PSAs endlessly. Then the authorities breathlessly announced that they were opening up the vax to more categories! Oh, hallelujah!! People waited fearfully, praying at night that their category would soon be approved for the vax.
Finally, it was opened up to all!!! Throngs of people waited hours to get their shot. Oh, we’re saved. Then the PSAs started targeting people by culture. The first where I’m at was an old cowboy with a southern drawl. Next was the American Indian... talking about how he maintained the chain of oral history for his people and how important it was to get the vax for his community.
Then the kids were authorized, there was less fanfare.
Then the bribes, lottery ticket for vax, sports tickets, $100.
Then the threats to your lively hood came. The social stigma.
Next come the beatings in public.
This whole thing sounds like a dystopian movie!
And how did they know all this without any trials?
RE: And how did they know all this without any trials?
This pill would not be given FDA Approval without going through all the necessary Phases 1 to 3 trials.
But Delta and Omicron both popped up in regions with low vaccination rates.
