A study released this month found that the number of concealed carry permits has increased almost 50 percent since 2016, reaching an all-time high.
The 75-page report, by Dr. John R. Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center, Carlisle E. Moody, Research Director and Professor at the College of William & Mary; and research associate Rujun Wang, was released on Oct. 11. It found that no less than 21.52 million people had active carry permits, averaging out to about 8.3 percent of the adults in the general population.
This percentage shifted greatly among states, for instance, with Alabama having 32 percent of adults with permits while some restrictive "may issue" states like California, Hawaii, Maryland, New Jersey, and Rhode Island all had abysmal rates of less than one percent with permits.
"If the Supreme Court strikes down the 'proper cause' requirement in the eight May Issue states, we estimate that there could be at least 2.3 million more concealed handgun permits," notes the report. "The eight states with that rule have issued permits to only 1.24 percent of their adult population compared to 10.77 percent for the other states."
Six states-- Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Texas-- have over a million permit holders. The Sunshine State had the greatest number of permits in the country, topping 2.5 million, while Hawaii had the least, with zero (0).

That number is 10x the number of active and guard military members.
More than the combined armies of the world.
The study needs some revisions. In some states, THE COUNTY OR PARISH HAS THEIR OWN CARRY LICENSE!! And this information is not given to the State Police offices, but head at the county or parish sheriff’s office.
I had one of these until my disability made me housebound.
So, I would DOUBLE THE NUMBER.
I still say requiring a permit is unconstitutional, and we give a lot of ground by celebrating states with high permit rates.
And that’s just the ones that they know about.
These permit numbers do not include the number of people choosing not to get permitted but still carry permitless. I think this number is well into the millions in those 21 states just because there are a lot of people who wanted to carry but didn't want the hassle or expense of taking a CCW course, getting fingerprinted, and getting their permit.
There are good reasons to get your CCW permit even in permitless states, mainly down to reciprocity with other states.
...and then there are the states where NO permit is necessary to carry concealed.

In a perfect world, we already have a “permit” to carry. It’s embodied in our Constitution and spelled out in the Second Amendment.
Of course as long as we have the Uniparty around, “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED” seems to be a suggestion rather than the command that it is.

That map should be solid blue. No one should be required to get a permit...convicted felons excepted.
Tennessee went constitutional carry this year. There are a lot more carrying now.
The Japs understood that 80 years ago.
