Hello FRiends,
So…many of you know I’m in CT. I’ve been homeless with my Jack Russell since January. I spent some time in Florida but now I’m back. I had some medical setbacks so I’m pretty much starting again.
I can’t find a place to live, and we’re going to be out on the street for the winter, which isn’t going to be good. Can anyone steer me toward a rental, pretty much anywhere in the country?
I’m hoping for CT or FL, but I’m pretty desperate.
Feel free to FReepmail me as well.
Thanks everyone.
“I’m hoping for CT or FL”
you do realize that except for CA, that’s some expensive territory.
You could live for 1/4 of what you’d pay there to live somewhere else.
Move
Back when I was single and down on my luck I had good luck with small cheap apartments in small towns with colleges. I had a good place in Charleston, Illinois near Eastern Illinois University. I had a nice place in Martin, Tennessee near UT Martin. Even in a bigger town, I found a nice house portion to rent in Birmingham Southside near The University of Alabama at Birmingham. My landlord was a pro handyman and fixed anything wrong immediately. Good luck !!
Are you restricted because of need for medical access? Because GA, SC, AL, could all be options.
Hurricane season is about over.
Honestly, anything south of the Mason Dixon line would be better than a New England winter.
Also, if CT is an option, then check out NH, VT, or western MA. I know NY near NYC is not desirable nor affordable. NH near Concord and Manchester is not much more than an hour from Boston for medical care and both cities have good hospitals.
If you go to a local college and read the posting boards and student newspapers you will likely find reasonably affordable apartments.
Their newspapers may even be on line.
A 2 bdrm apt in Blacksburg is about $1300. College towns can be expensive compared to the surrounding areas
“The only reason I came back is because my family wanted me here to “help” me, though I’m still waiting on that.”
Without sounding callous, there is more to this story.
You came back because family wanted to help you, except “surprisingly” they aren’t. So what are the reasons they gave to induce you to return, and what are the reasons they are not helping you once you arrived? Must be a major issue, and not sure if whatever that is might affect your ability to acquire or maintain a rental property. Something doesn’t make sense here.
But you have job. You probably have a bank account and a car... you are using (”bumming off”) someone’s address to insure the car and list with the bank account. You can work from anywhere. Forget FL and CT. If you can pass a credit check, Buffalo or Scranton might be your nearest options. You might not like the neighborhoods, depending how much you want/can spend. If you can’t pass a credit check, you can still rent, but then you will be in an entirely “different rental market.”
I’m awfully sorry family help is not working out. Are you a veteran?
Do you need to be near hospitals?
The area around Roanoke Va is reasonable to rent, even buy, and there are tons of senior apartments and ammenities.
But i hope your family situation gets better because family is the only thing.
God bless.
As a computer person, it is very hard to find a job now. The Indians have taken over the tech recruiting market. And they wont hire Americans. This is what is causing a lot of homelessness. And it is something we are not allowed to talk about. I am in the same boat. So I enrolled at the university. Student loans and grants have kept me off the streets.
Have you checked with any churches or Christian associations in the area? They may can help. Some in our area also work through Habitat.
Hi!
Most parts of USA will let you buy (or rent) a very decent place for your $1500 or less NO PROBLEM
even parts of Florida, stay away from the big cities tho
Now then, if not CT or FL, then near Florida might be satisfactory for you? Georgia, Alabama, S. Carolina, Louisiana all have MANY nice small towns with houses available for less than $1500 a month, or rentals if you really want to go that way’
and you can still visit your friends or family in Florida, you will be reasonably close for at least occasional visits in either direction
your woofie will like having his own back yard too, if you buy a house
all the best to you, fhc
This isn’t adding up.
I’m starting to assume you’re kind of on the run.
I knew a guy that was homeless because he was on the run from the IRS. Refused to pay because he thought they were unconstitutional. Couldn’t hold a regular job. Couldn’t pass a credit check so couldn’t rent or buy a home. Family didn’t want him around because he was a belligerent bastard. He ended up homeless. Even the shelter booted him out for fighting.
try rooms for rent/share on Craigslist, if you have not already.
$1,500/month will get you a very nice place to live in much of the country; and most of those places would also have internet access.
Here in the Des Moines, IA area, you could rent a nice safe condo for closer to $1,000 month. Ample quality internet service providers available if you do computer work remotely.
On zillow.com, in southwest Michigan i saw 6 homes under 100,000.
Okay detective. Of course there’s more to the story. Not sure what conspiracy theory you’re looking for. I was very successful and retired twenty years ago a millionaire. Lost it all, including giving up my house. Have to start again in my late 50s. Family is another story.
I honestly am not sure I will make it. That’s the short version.
$1500 still goes a long way in flyover country. Look around on Zillow.
Prayers that you find something appropriate and affordable for your needs.
I was the CTO of a public company. I recently took a job FAR below my skill set, just for the money. I thought I would hate it, but it’s mindless work that allows me to read my book during the day. I’m happy.
