Prayer request
None ^ | 8-23-2021 | Me

My father is in his late 70's, type-1 diabetic, requires oxygen, and has been very clear - do not resuscitate, or any significant treatment if something happened. He's had a long life and is content, doesn't want to burden. His right arm stopped moving, 911 called - ended up in ICU, he had a stroke. They thought he would pass but now it appears he has lost motor control on his entire right side and is in EXACTLY the circumstances he didn't want to be in, it looks like he will live. My mother won't be able to care for him. My brother and I will do what we can but can only be limited. I'm in tears and need prayers & advise. Thank you in advance.

It seems not (after looking it up) - the doctors said it was a stroke with “large bleeding”. They are now talking “days, weeks, months” for rehab - which he’d never want and, I doubt, would ever really recover from to a livable state.

It’s too early to give up. The rehab will frustrate and anger him, but be patient and understanding. People can come a long way back with time and effort.

Unfortunately I might be able to give you some advice if you think a Nursing Home might be the solution.

Also is any dementia involved with either of your living parents?-Tom

My sincere prayers for your father and family in the valley of the shadow of death. My family knows to ‘let me go’. Trust God and release your father to Him. God can give your father oxygen on earth if He has not got a table waiting for him. Read Ecclesiastes 3.2 and John 14:1-3. Letting someone go is not pushing and the fact that it hurts is very healthy. kdf calvario.kerrville@gmail.com

He’s certainly not anywhere as mentally sharp as he used to be (was an engineer), forgets he’s told the same stories many times...so probably some level of dementia but you could still have a reasonable discussion.

I’m not sure they can afford a nursing home...but honestly I know little about those options & costs. Thoughts welcome.

I will keep your father, and your family in my prayers.

Back in 1978, my father who was 73 at the time, was diagnosed with lung cancer. The surgeons attempted to take that lobe of the lung out, but his blood pressure kept going down too low, so they closed him up, and recommended cobalt treatments. The next afternoon he had a stroke. He was in a coma for almost two weeks. When he came out of it, he was paralyzed on one side, and couldn't talk. On June 20, 1978, the day they were going to move him to a nursing home, he suffered another stroke and died. My mother was in the hospital herself at the time, having been diagnosed with cervical cancer. After surgery, she was in isolation with radiation rods inserted in her. She wasn't even able to go to his funeral.

That’s the problem I see...they asked about giving him a feeding tube. Is *that* the option? Let him starve? Don’t give him his insulin? It doesn’t appear that he’ll pass from this on his own and these options seem cruel. A type-1 diabetic requiring oxygen isn’t a great start for rehab to be successful - I don’t think he’s up to it, nor wants to be.
