He’s certainly not anywhere as mentally sharp as he used to be (was an engineer), forgets he’s told the same stories many times...so probably some level of dementia but you could still have a reasonable discussion.
I’m not sure they can afford a nursing home...but honestly I know little about those options & costs. Thoughts welcome.
Prayers for your Dad and your family, and for you.
May The Holy Spirit give you wisdom and comfort during this very difficult time.

The cost of nursing homes will vary from State to State. In Massachusetts it is anywhere from $8,000/month to $12,000/month. You get billed monthly from the nursing home. That is about $96,000-$144,000 per Year. An experienced elder services lawyer that knows your state laws can knock that monthly bill way down depending on your income.
It will take months dealing with Fed and State health organizations, Insurance companies, State and Federal rules , wills, and property deeds, State Power of Attorney, and Representative Payee for the Feds who will not honor any States Power of Attn..
Above is just off the top of my head it is not to discourage you but to encourage you to get some outside help if a nursing home gets involved. Every state law is different and a knowledgeable attorney should know how to handle the situation in your State. It will cost some money but it will save someone thousands of dollars per month, and be worth it.-Tom
If your Dad is a veteran, VA benefits now include up to $2000 for Home Health Aides, or a nursing home.
I left you a note on the Prayer Thread.
