Why should people in the eastern United States be concerned about earthquakes?

1) Severe earthquakes have occurred in the eastern U.S. In November of 1755, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.0 and a maximum intensity of 7.0 occurred about 50 miles northeast of Boston, Massachusetts. Boston was heavily damaged.

Other strong earthquakes recorded in the continental US were centered in southeastern Missouri near the border with Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee.

In the winter of 1811-1812, a series of three powerful earthquakes of magnitudes about 7.0 to 7.8 and hundreds of aftershocks occurred near New Madrid, Missouri.

36th floor—I can’t even imagine.

Many decades ago I had an office job in San Francisco (when it was an actual civilized place) and was working on the mere 6th floor when a decent size earthquake hit. It was my first one since I had moved there from the East Coast.

First thing I noticed was that the tiles beneath my feet started to separate and then move back together again...

Then I looked out the window and noticed the other buildings outside were swaying....

The locals thought nothing of it... :-)

My concerned brain space is kind of used up right now.

I’ve been through about 10 good size earthquakes, ALL of them in the Philippines. My first quake was the BIGGEST - a 6.5 in 1969. I was in the living room, playing cards at a table with my brothers when the floor began moving UP and DOWN ! It lasted FOREVER !! My dad called out to watch the power station which we could see across the Cagayan de Oro Bay. He expected it to shut down ! I had flashbacks to a movie I’d seen years before where the earth split open due to an earthquake and swallowed an entire village of screaming natives .. . LUCKILY, Sheena, Queen of Tanzania, escaped unscathed with the help of her rescuer, Sterling Prince, a terribly mysterious British Explorer .. .

I’m going to worry about it!! When it happens, the elites in DC will blame Trump Republicans, Nancy will form a committee to see how Trump’s activities caused it, so she could impeach him again, The Squad will blame Zionism/Jews/America, AOC/Bernie Sanders/other Social Dems will call for higher taxes, John Kerry will blame Climate Change, Hank Johnson will say the USA will flip over and Joe Biden will stumble in a speech about it!!! 🤓

And falling trees after hurricanes have already killed many more than all earthquakes east of the Rockies since 1820.

One of the pleasures of living where I do is that we are among the lowest risk of natural disasters in the country. I'll gladly trade that for shoveling a foot or two of snow every now or then.

That said, our sky is very smoky right now from wildfires far to the West. I do feel very sorry for those who are losing homes this fire season.

I remember that swaying crap CLEARLY. Right after it stopped shaking, I went to the bathroom and the water in all the toilets was still swishing from right to left and back, like waves! There was still that much movement in the building. The buildings in Sodom on the Puget Sound (formerly seattle) are built to sway back and forth to not crack and fall over I believe is what they say, UNTIL they do crack and tumble over into the Sound!!! But, yup, they were still going back and forth for a while.

CDC says no problem: Just get your vaccination, wear amask and social distance.
