Why should people in the eastern United States be concerned about earthquakes?

1) Severe earthquakes have occurred in the eastern U.S. In November of 1755, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.0 and a maximum intensity of 7.0 occurred about 50 miles northeast of Boston, Massachusetts. Boston was heavily damaged.

Other strong earthquakes recorded in the continental US were centered in southeastern Missouri near the border with Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee.

In the winter of 1811-1812, a series of three powerful earthquakes of magnitudes about 7.0 to 7.8 and hundreds of aftershocks occurred near New Madrid, Missouri.

New Madrid is the primary concern in the East. When it lets go....it’s gonna be devestating.

I experienced two different earthquakes in Boston during the years I lived there.

They didn’t cause any damage because they were pretty small, but they were big enough to feel the walls shaking and to have my rocking chair start slightly rocking.

On the second map, what are the dots?

Are they epicenters?

Gotta say the blue pills help you get there.

I make a note of it in my worry journal.
Right below global warming and above covid19-24.

We had a four pointer up here in RI back in November. Shook the house for about 10-15 seconds. I thought it was the washing machine at first. Then my text messages from work started pinging about feeling it too.

I went through a 5 in Michigan. Mrs. Tanker and I were reading Sunday papers when I felt unsettled. I looked up and saw the lamp between us vibrating. I got in a doorjam put my hands on it and could feel it.

It was so small there was no damage. But even that made me feel like my insides were vibrating. It was disturbing. I knew at that point that I never wanted to be in a big one. I get why people sleep outdoors after one.

When God Almighty finally judges the USA, I am of the opinion that the major fault lines in the West, the Midwest and the East will all go at the same time. Simultaneously, the Yellowstone Cauldara will also explode. The USA will be destroyed and very few people will live to tell the tale. Mark my words........

There aren’t too many major earthquakes along passive margins.

Back in the late ‘90s or early 2000’s, we worked in downtown Sodom on the Puget Sound (seattle) and I worked on the 36th floor of a building when we got hit by a 6.9 roller. It tore book cases in our office library that were hooked to the walls completely off the walls. Dumped huge piles of books in the floor. People were tossed around. I was under my work station as stuff fell from the ceiling, with my hand out trying to keep my computer keyboard and monitor from coming off the desk! My wife said she was under her desk also. But, she did not care about her computer as it smashed to the floor next to her. A 6.9 will leave you with brown stains in your shorts. We had people that were traumatized by the quake. They simply could not come back into the high rise. Scared the crap out of them.

We’ve been through four mag 3 and 4 quakes up here in NW GA in the past 30 years. They are a risk, but a minor risk compared to tornadoes. And falling trees after hurricanes have already killed many more than all earthquakes east of the Rockies since 1820.
