Comedian Jackie Mason passed away yesterday on July 24th. He made me laugh like no other comedian ever did, perhaps because he was a visible Jew, but unlike some other Jewish comedians, he never apologized for his Jewishness; he bragged about it.
Born Yacov Moshe Hakohen Maza, Mason came from a long line of rabbis that included his father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. His three older brothers were also rabbis. After being ordained as a rabbi, he led congregations in Pennsylvania and North Carolina but, after a few years, quit the rabbinate to answer his true calling, making people laugh. But he never forgot his rabbinical learning, “Every time I see a contradiction or hypocrisy in somebody’s behavior,” he once quipped, “I think of the Talmud and build the joke from there.”
In the short time since his death was announced, celebrities and other notable figures mourned Mason’s death. Gilbert Gottfried called him “one of the best. Sean Hannity remarked that he was “irreverent, iconoclastic, funny, smart and a great American patriot. His life was even celebrated by “The Fonz.”

Very sad, what a funny guy he was.
Thats a good memory to share.
Jackie Mason, Red Skelton…both amazing non-politically correct comedians. Who’s left? No one else except Mel Brooks, who is now 95 years old. (Do yourself a favor and dig into the old comedy radio and film shows from the 1930s to to 1960s and enjoy our God-given heritage.)
I spend most of nightly walks listening to old radio comedy and mystery and adventure shows (all free on various podcasts) and love it.
Ditto...
What a talent. Rest In Peace, Rabbi.
Amen to that....

I see a contradiction here. If he was so proud of his Jewishness, then why the name change?
It's common for entertainers with unwieldy names to change to simpler names for the stage. It has nothing to do with be ashamed of one's heritage.
For example, we have Delcan McManus (Elvis Costello and Steveland Judkins (Stevie Wonder).
None of those original names exactly roll off the tongue.
After the horrors of the holocaust had been laid bare by General Eisenhower at tge end of WWII, the many Jewish kids we grew up with in the 50s & 60s around the DC metro area went to Hebrew school after regular school and included their goyishe classmates in their Bar Mitzvahs, and we sang Hannukah songs along with the Christmas Carols at the December school show, and we all got along fine. Assimilation usually takes a couple of generations.
Amazed you found fault with assimilation, R2nd.
RIP, Jackie Mason: King of the politically incorrect comics
Mark Levin also did a very moving 'in memory of' on Monday night's show.
