I am interested in buying a .22 pistol for carry and target shooting. I have been looking at the Beretta M9 22, but recently was impressed with a Taurus model.
Any recommendations? Any ones to stay away from?
I asked why he chose that caliber. The answer to the question might be the answer to those other questions. Unfortunately, I did not receive an answer.
Get one that shoots all 22 including LR.
You got others!?

Well my Beauty is
A Ruger GP 100 .22 Revolver
I did see your question and he did answer in a post to a different FReeper that he already has other caliber ‘solutions’ so apparently wants to add .22 to his collection. He just never really says for what purpose, yet.
Beretta U22 Neos .22 LR Pistol
If you like the 43, then the 44 makes a lot of sense for practicing with the same size, type of .22

Glocksters and wonder nines, Pftt. Anything else you’re a midget, lol. On a side note, I’ll tell you about a cheap and very effective front sight treatment for all guns with typical sights. Get yourself some fingernail polish neutral base coat and treat the front sight area with it. Then touch it up with a pink fluorescent Sharpie Highlighter. It works equally well in bright sunlight and semi-darkness. It is far more effective than the red, white, or gold front sight dots commonly in use.
PPKs are the most dependable and safely carried weapons out there - so I wouldn't dismiss the idea so quickly.
What makes you think I'd miss with my S&W 357 with a 4" barrel, than I'd hit with my 22 with the same 4" barrel?
My personal carry choice is a S&W 38 snubby and I can put all 5 in a pie plate at 25 feet, any distance greater than that I should be able to still hit a man, but it might not be a kill shot.
Since my 357 is a vehicle gun, I can hit anything trying to get into my vehicle, through the windshield or side windows, I know because I've practiced shooting through both {I did have eye and ear protection and was wearing heavy clothing and gloves}.
My pal owns a junk yard and let me blow out some glass in a coupla of his junkers.
Shooting 357 inside a car with closed windows, without ear protection, might really damage your ability to hear for a long time.
I was impressed with the TX22 when I looked at it yesterday. It fit my hand, something that Glocks don’t do; they just don’t feel right to me.
I’ll study up on this one.
I may have handled this thread poorly at the onset. I am looking for a .22 for target and carry; I did not specify that I had 9mm, 380, Beretta 7.65 and S&W 357 already. I was looking for .22 advice and have gotten a lot of it.
I love to read all these postings. You guys are GREAT!
ThatBeretta 7.65 wwould be the Beretta 82? ... Great carry piece with the right cavitatuion ammo. Twelve round mags and a good double action first shot pull, too! Carry that, not a 22lr, if you want personal protection with no recoil you’d under pressure. Look at Underwood cavitation ammo
I would carry a bigger caliber, but if it’s a .22LR you want I would suggest a little gem I found called an FEG-22, looks like a miniature Walther PPK in .22 caliber. It’s small enough for pocket carry.
You might also consider a snub nose .22LR revolver for pocket carry. If you can get it in .22 Magnum, now you are talking!
It is a 1935 model. Old, but a very nice piece.
Ok. Keep in mind that target AND carry dont always go well together.
A target .22 for practicing fundamentals would have a longer barrel for accuracy (like a Mark III Ruger for example) which would not holster and conceal so well. A target trigger may also be much lighter than a defensive trigger, which could be a negligent discharge issue in a defensive situation.
Keep in mind the .22 ammunition malfunctions are much more likely than ammo malfunctions from factory new center fire defensive ammo for larger calibers. .22 misfires are just too common for defensive use reliability IMHO.
Finally, in my experience, .22 magazines usually need to be handled with care, as they typically dont take the kind of abuse that larger center fire magazines can take and still function. The thin .22 magazines typically dont lend themselves to fast tactical or emergency reloads.
The malfunction issue and magazine reliability issue would steer me away from .22 for carry.
FRegards,
Depending on clothes, I carry a Beretta 82 and two extra mags sometimes. Also have a Taurus 92 22magnum revolver eith shot with snubby 2” barrel and a laser pointer. Those are my three carry pieces ... not all at once. At my age recoil is something to avoid. HOWEVER, beside tool is a Taurus 92AF with eighteen round mag and a green laser on the under rail.
S&W 351C is a nice gun, but is a 22 magnum, so will be a lot more expensive to shoot than 22LR.
Excellent advice. Centerfire cartridges are more reliable than rim fire. Smallest center fire is the 25acp but the 32acp is better, with that cavitation ammo. Expensive, but effective.
I have often wanted to do a laser aiming experiment.
Take 3 or 4 handguns, all the same caliber but 2” , 3”, 4” and 6” barrels.
Shoot them with and without lasers on.
My guess is that a laser is worth about ²” worth of barrel.
