The New Air Force Fitness Test Will Feature Walking Instead Of Running And Modified Push-Ups
Task and Purpose ^ | 06/29/21 | David Roza

The Air Force raised some eyebrows on Monday when it announced upcoming changes to its physical training test that would allow airmen to choose their own adventure for demonstrating physical prowess.

The new test, which the service will begin to experiment with in January 2022, will allow airmen to choose between running, shuttle run sprints, and walking for the aerobic portion of the test. Shuttle run sprints involve sprinting back and forth between two markers about 25 meters apart. They could then choose between planks and sit-ups for the core strength measure. And for the final portion of the test airmen would be allowed to choose between push-ups and raised-hand push-ups.

Instead of going up and down like a traditional push-up, the raised hand push-ups allow airmen to alternate lifting their hands up while in the push-up ready position, said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, the deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services at Air Force headquarters, when he discussed the upcoming changes to the physical fitness test in a live chat with Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne Bass on Monday.

The new options are supposed to give airmen more flexibility to do the test the way they want to, Kelly explained. The test will begin a six-month trial period starting in January.

“Say you’re not a long-distance runner but you wanted to run fast back and forth, we have a shuttle run back and forth about 25 meters apart,” he said.

There may be more options revealed over the next several months, but the lieutenant general ruled out swimming or rowing as other options for the aerobic portion. Not all Air Force installations have the facilities for those kinds of tests, he explained. The test will still score participants on a 100 point scale, with the aerobic portion being worth 60 points and the other two worth 20 points each.

Uhhh...my Air Force ain't the same anymore.

I wonder where they will get the talent to load 108 500 pounders onto each of 60 B-52s next time they need to do it. In 1972, it seems that every two striper in a non-critical AFSC did a TDY to Guam to be a bomb loader.

They were BUFs most of us got a little more buff too.

Just circling back to the way it was prior to 1990.

Well this is quite a departure from the old regimen.

1.5mi every other day in formation.

Screw up anything and get to edge the track for a day.

Also tack on CQ for the weekend.

There’s a reason that we in the Army back in the day used to call it the “Chair Force”.

My husband was required to do wet-ditching drills. I guess that is too hard now, so they will allow dry-ditching drills.

There’s a reason that we in the Army back in the day used to call it the “Chair Force”.

I was in the USAF for 20 years, and sat in a chair my whole career, but I always had a PAR or ASR in front of me. I was always in an adversarial relationship with commissioned officers, so I told my son, to become an officer. He took my advice, and now is a USAF officer and pilot.
No one knows how well they can fly, until they try it. He seems to be doing it rather well. He wanted to be a close air support pilot, for the Army, but they assigned him to fly a different mission, but he tried. 👍

Since the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is a woke chump, I am surprised they haven’t changed it yet. I have talked to enough enlisted people. The majority are not happy with wokeness.

considering women already are named as a term that is “man” with a “wo” in front of it, they should hardly be complaining about other terms that have a prefix part in front of “man”.

I’ve had some good experience with APACHE on AF ranges.

3am calling in strikes from a mountain top in AZ.

They were testing new tech. 1995.

Yes, it was taped. About 4 if I recall. Had one 300ft above me to show where Not to aim. :^)

Old Bird with me as well.

Seems like the whole military should be at least a little bit tough or is that asking too much. It really is a betrayal of those who sign up.

well good for him! :) at least he got/gets to be a pilot.

I am amazed at how much training they go through. He is a 1st Lieutenant, and he is still in training, but should be finished with training by about October. As I mentioned, his desire, was to be a close air support pilot for the Army, and that is what he put on his dream sheet, but they gave him a different mission, according to his flying prowess. I said, now you see what happens, when you are at the top of your class? They give you exactly what you didn’t want. He will make the best of it.
We always had some good natured rivalry with the Army, but when they were pinned down, I think most of them, were glad to see a flight of strike eagles, or thunderbolts, arrive on the scene. 😀👍
