John Wayne is an American Hollywood icon every bit the equal of James Dean or Marilyn Monroe. He is also a man from another era, a man whose conservatism came as naturally as walking down the street. Affectionately known as “The Duke,” he spent three decades as a top box office draw with 179 film and television credits to his name
His story is as American as his values. Born Marion Robert Morrison in Iowa at a whopping 13 pounds, his family relocated to Southern California. His family first arrived in America from Ireland in 1799 and his grandfather was a Civil War veteran. His nickname was bestowed upon him in childhood (“Little Duke” at the time) by a milkman amused by the omnipresence of Wayne’s Airdale Terrier, Duke.
Wayne attended the University of Southern California where he studied pre-law and played football for the Trojans before a broken collarbone from a bodysurfing accident ended his college athletic career. Losing his athletic scholarship forced Wayne to drop out of school.
He was first hired by the legendary Western director, John Ford, and silent Western star, Tom Mix. It was Mix who then introduced him to Wyatt Earp, who Wayne credited with his on-screen mannerisms.

How can the author write about John Wayne’s movies without mentioning Maureen O’Hara?
That's what my father always called him - he did have an excuse that at 34 he was a father of four and if he were drafted it would have caused his family undue hardship... like a lot who weren't cowards and did serve.
A particularly dirty test shot, "Harry", sent radioactive dust over where Wayne was shooting a Howard Hughes movie, The Conqueror.
Aggressive cancers killed Susan Hayward, Pedro Armendiaz, Wayne...
The Trilogy about the troopers in the West fighting Indians, just incredible.
"Ah, that red hair is no loi."
He also owned a feed lot in Casa Grande.
Before he was a headliner he was a stunt man and grip, so it is entirely possible. Many of his early films as a stunt man or grip were uncredited.

Thanks for the info.
>>>“every bit the equal of James Dean or Marilyn Monroe”
That’s an insult to JW.<<<
I agree. They’re not in the same league at all.
Red River
I remember he had a hell of a lot of Texas Prime Steak in his intestines when they performed his autopsy... something like 18 pounds.
He was true American Read Meat Eating Man.
I don’t think it was the steak that killed him; I think he died of a broken heart when Jimmy Carter gave up the Panama Canal. I was in Jungle Warfare in February of 76. Wayne died sometime during Carter’s debacle... Iran is the DNC legacy and allowing the defeat of the Vietnam Army by refusing resupply.
John Wayne’s not dead - he’s frozen! And when we find a cure for cancer, we’re gonna thaw out the Duke and he’s gonna be pretty pissed off. You know why? You ever taken a cold shower? Well, multiply that by 15 million times. That’s how pissed off the Duke’s gonna be.
