‘Invincible, young, healthy’: Ohio young adults not interested in getting coronavirus vaccine

Unfounded fears that the coronavirus vaccine causes infertility, a need to question authority and politicization of vaccines are cited as leading reasons for lagging rates of youth vaccination in Ohio and across the country.

“It’s frustrating,” said psychologist Juanita Martin, executive director of counseling and accessibility at the University of Akron. “Young people have a sense of, ‘I’m invincible, I’m young, I’m healthy — nothing is going to happen to me.’ The wider implications just don’t resonate with them.”

The fast-spreading Delta variant is infecting younger people worldwide. This makes vaccinating this population more important.

The national trends also are seen in the Buckeye State.

While vaccination rates for Ohioans exceed 70% for every age group over 60 – as high as 84% for those in their early 70s - based on the number of people receiving at least one shot, they are much lower for younger age groups. Through Thursday, the rates were 39% for those in their 20s and about 30% for those ages 12 to 19....

The White House admitted this week that the country will miss its target of 70% of American adults having had at least one vaccination shot by July 4, in part because of vaccine resistance among 18-to 26-year-olds.

“Many younger Americans have felt like COVID-19 is not something that impacts them and they’ve been less eager to get the shot,” White House coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients said during a recent news briefing.

According to a new survey from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults 18–24 were least likely to report having received a COVID-19 vaccine and were most likely to report they were unsure...

“Unfounded fears that the coronavirus vaccine causes infertility”

“Unfounded”, perhaps, but not unproven.

Covid-

Overhyped media and political “crap” that plays on a Hollywood sensitized audience: https://parade.com/1149779/kimberlyzapata/best-virus-movies/

If Covid were to break out this very second, you would see Biden and the Democrats react very different than in 2019 - 2020 where they used it in opposition politics.

Ask yourself this: If we had the elections been 3 November 2019, how do you think things would have gone?

But the stupidity of Covid will be with us FOREVER, just like a crotch grabbing TSA, body scanners, and warrantless searches at airports. How many terrorist has a $9,000,000,000 per year TSA caught? 0. Likewise, most of the rules and policies that all these buffoons are creating today based on this pandemic accomplish NOTHING.

I had a debate with a medical doctor in this forum (or so he stated) and at work regards going to the beach (which I did). That was when they were closing the beaches. I had someone at work actually ask me, “don’t you think that is reckless?” I couldn’t take it anymore, so I asked them: Is that because of the high temperatures, the UV light, sand which a virus don’t like, salt water, or the fresh air and natural spreading out of people on a beach, unlike the recirculated air I am breathing at work? While the person shut up, you then are the bad guy because you’re not allowed to question the mass hysteria and group think.

If I were a public official and I REALLY believed in the efficacy and the safety of the vaccines for ALL ages....

I would make sure we kept an up-to-date and precisely accurate public accounting of all Covid illnesses, deaths, hospital stays, etc... by age along with the same metrics for those who got the vaccine.

There is no way that you can describe the current Covid tracker and the VAERS systems the way I described above.

Let’s say I were a 25 year old and saw that I had a 10% of catching Covid, an 5% chance of becoming ill, a 2.5% chance of becoming extremely ill, a 1% chance of being hospitalized and a .2% chance of dying from Covid.

Then lets say I saw that if I took the vaccine, I had a 50% chance of becoming ill from the vaccine and a 1% chance from becoming ill from Covid and a 3% chance of becoming extremely ill from the vaccine and a .5% chance of becoming extremely ill from Covid and .5% chance of being hospitalized from the vaccine and a .25% chance of being hospitalized from Covid, and a .01% chance of dying from the vaccine and a .005% chance of dying from Covid.

And then let’s say they had an offset/multiplier for BMI, Vit D level, A1C level, history of cancer, average blood pressure, etc...to move those percentages up or down depending on co-morbidities.

And then let’s say that ALL of these numbers were being update weekly to reflect the latest information....I would have to balance those 2 sets of data and feel that I was making the best informed decision that I could make. It is 2021. If we wanted to provide this level of visibility into the data, we could do so. I wonder why they don’t want to provide this level of visibility?

(all of those numbers were made up off the top of my head so don’t bitch about their accuracy)

You don’t need to be invincible or feel invincible to understand the meaning of “98.9% survival rate.”

If you made it through grade school math classes with C or better grades it’s pretty clear.

The people that succumb to getting the jab either are terribly fearful and this trumps their ability to do solid research or they are amazingly stupid.

That is all.

I’m damn proud of being unvaxed, and I am damn proud of not wearing a mask.

Same here. During the height of this madness about a year ago, I made a big show of ripping the stupid mask off as soon as leaving a store requiring it. I got a kick out of the nervous nellies coming into the store as I was coming out unmasked. Some of them would literally recoil in horror at the sight of me.

Now the stores around here mostly have signs stating "masks encouraged" or "please wear a mask if you are unvaccinated" - if they have signs at all. I proudly walk in those places unmasked and if anybody ever asks me (they haven't yet), I will say "sure, I've been vaccinated."

Just don't have to tell them what I was vaccinated for.

Polio, rubella, tetanus...

I wonder why they don’t want to provide this level of visibility?

As Shakespeare said; "ay, there's the rub!"

For the first two or three months my county health dept. posted pretty complete information on cases, places, age and sex, hospitalizations and deaths. Then, following the FedMob's example (or possibly their orders), they reduced it all to case numbers and deaths.

Maybe young adults aren't as stupid as we thought.

Please God, let this be true.

“Just don’t have to tell them what I was vaccinated for.”

It’s none of their business - I figure since we don’t owe them an answer - then it’s not a lie if we blow smoke up their asses.

When strangers ask where I live, how many kids I have, who I voted for, what I do, how much I make - I make up all sorts of happy horse shit since it’s none of their business.

And why should I have to say “I’d rather not divulge that information”?
That’s none of their business either.

You are absolutely correct.

There are all sorts of “What If” scenario calculators out there or stock purchases, mortgages, life insurance, etc.

By now, some enterprising wonky, Azberger’s person could put together a website on ‘rona scenario calculations based on probabilities from numbers that are already out there.

He could make a killing.

Of course, he site would be quickly cyber attacked.

Unfounded fears that the coronavirus vaccine causes infertility

There would not be any evidence one way or the other for quite some time. Simple caution says you don’t do a universal vaccination without years of observation - especially to address such a low risk disease for those in the fertile ages or younger. Should some young people get vaccinated? Sure...but it is on a case by case basis.
