First-time unemployment claims surprisingly rose to a month-long high as the U.S. economy faces an ongoing labor shortage under the Biden administration.
According to the Department of Labor, 412,000 Americans filed for initial jobless benefits last week, marking the highest level in a month. Economists expected just 360,000 new claims.
The rise in claims comes days after a Labor Department report showed that U.S. job openings reached a record high 9.3 million in April. Employers hired just 6.1 million people during the same period, meaning one in three postings went unfilled.
Jobless claims particularly grew in California and Pennsylvania, two states that have not moved to end the Biden administration's enhanced benefits ahead of the scheduled September expiration date. Job Creators Network president and CEO Alfredo Ortiz blamed the unexpected rise on a "left-wing agenda that is paying people to sit on the couch instead of rejoining the workforce."

Unexpectedly
As usual...
This calls for reimagining unemployment. Surely we shouldn’t count anybody receiving a check. After all they are working at not working.
Pay more and you will get employees...
Obamanation, the sequel.
Because there has been no job growth. Just a few jobs that existed before the “plandemic” was unleashed on the economy, had finally returned.
It is a little surprising that businesses are laying off workers, but as the economy opens up, some operations that did a roaring trade when the country was locked down may have to scale back.
Drink!
Exactly.

If folks can get checks for enjoying the summer weather instead of working, many will go for it.
If the checks stop, the numbers will radically change—folks will work whether they like the jobs or not.
Every place I look I see help wanted signs posted all over businesses. Their even advertising on TV for specialty trades/crafts.
Obama 2009-2016: unexpectedly lower than estimated = Bush’s fault
Trump 2017-2020: unexpectedly higher than estimated = Obama’s policies
Biden 2021: unexpectedly lower than estimated = Trump’s fault
Nice talking point but these are people who were laid off. If you quit you can’t claim unemployment.
$500 - $1000 signing bonuses too.
Our society is filled with lazy bums.
Perhaps, but if the jobs don’t pay enough to live on then they will end up on government assistance of one sort or another. So what is being gained?
We’re back to the Bush-Obama cheap labor policies with predictable results.
My last job as a city engineer I got a $5,000 bonus.
