You've probably had a conversation with someone that went like this:
YOU: "Demented Perv Biteme is allowing in x thousand more illegals."
THEY: "Don't they understand that these illegals will sooner or later end up in their cities? On their doorstep?"
or,
YOU: "I see fascist so-called antifa is rioting in Portland again today."
THEY: "Don't they understand that sooner or later these riots will get to their neighborhoods?"
We could substitute almost any topic---taxes, Iran, the China Virus---and the "YOU/THEY" conversation would be the same.
Their positions defy logic. And that's because they have no interest in logic, common sense, or most of all, reality.
The American Left is driven 100% now by a woke Progressivism that cannot end anywhere short of the collapse of Western Civilization. No, this is not hyperbole. It's where they want to go.
In my formative years at Arizona State under the tutelage of a true genius, Professor Robert Loewenberg, I recall him going on at length about the "Open Society." That was the term he used at the time for modern Leftist "wokeness" and chaos. His point was that no society, ever, can be "open" or to use a slightly different term, perfect---though Leftists would never admit to any perfection.
This is important: it means NO MATTER WHERE WE ARE IT'S NEVER ENOUGH!
As Mike Allen and I wrote in "A Patriot's History of the United States" when discussing Abby Hoffmann and Jerry Rubin, Rubin once said:
"Satisfy our demands and we got twelve more . . . . All we want from these meetings are demands THAT THE ESTABLISHMENT CAN NEVER SATISFY." Precisely. It's not about this grievance or that grievance. It's not about "better police," or "fairness" in voting. It's about power. Once conservatives finally get that through their thick skulls they can compete with the Left. Not before.
So, to our friends, "Don't they understand . . . ?" They precisely understand. Their movement is aimed at power. Once they get it, they'll worry about illegals in their neighborhoods, or fascist antifa in their cities, or whatever. ONCE IN POWER THEY CAN KILL ANYONE who gets in their way, just as Lenin and Mao and Castro did. So, no, it won't get to "their neighborhoods."
In a broader sense, this is all a magnification of the Cloward-Piven Thesis that seeks to destabilize & destroy American (and all Western) society through overloading the system with grifters on the one hand and restrictions of order (i.e., police, governments, courts) on the other.
The answer to "Don't they understand . . . ?" Is simple. Yes. Yes, they completely understand---but most of them think it won't happen to them, just as Trotsky and the Mensheviks thought because they were "good communists" it wouldn't happen to them, or just as Rohm and the other SA thought because they were "good Nazis" it wouldn't happen to them.
It always happens to them.

These are not your grandparent’s progressives. They want to see the world as we know it burn.
The only way to defeat the Left is to give them everything they want.......................
We all need to Defund the Left, stop giving them our money by buying their garbage. Money = Power
Additional wrinkle: They see their utopia as a better outcome surpassing any short-term tragedy or suffering or loss. Whatever the short term pain, their imagined outcome is better.

Every time I get the “they don’t understand...” amazement, I say “A successful and free capitalist US is the greatest barrier to the global Marxist utopia they are desperate to bring about. Some of them know what they are doing. The rest are just idiots.”
I live in the middle of the forest. They don’t want to come here. Too creepy for them and everyone’s got a gun.
