A few years ago, a man told me this story.
He was a retired professor. He had a healthy pension. His wife had died after a long illness. He had a troubled son, some of it drugs, lots of it due to blowing money.
“You won’t believe this,” he said. “I’ve got money trouble.”
He lived in Michigan. His son lived another state. Because of some decisions the professor had made when his son was young, he felt guilty about not “being there enough” for his son.
The professor said he had paid for a couple of trips to rehabilitation for his son. He also spent thousands keeping his son out of major debt.
“I’ve given him money,” the professor said. “I’ve taken out loans. Maxed out credit cards. I even got some of those payday loans. Right now, I can’t pay my mortgage.”
His family was trying to pull him away from the troubled son and help put his finances in order. Six months after hearing that story, I heard the professor had died of a heart attack.
NOT AN UNCOMMON STORY
“The money problems of an addict in the family is something many families don’t talk about,” said Father Bob Stec, pastor of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Brunswick.
Stec has worked with families of addicts, especially those on heroin. He mentioned recently talking to six couples who were in premarital counseling.
“Two of the six had a sibling who died from heroin,” said Stec. “The impact on the families is devastating. It’s a terrible disease that eats away at so many people.”

Yes. It would be fascinating to hear from pedo Joe Biden on this topic. Like where he got the money to subsidize hunters obnoxious waste of a life. Probably wasn’t all from his legit “salary”.
A national government might legalize the safest form of a drug for each brain receptor class (dopamine, opioid, etc.).
It might be say codeine or cocaine solution in two-liter bottles.

The color for codeine solutions might vary by concentration. Green for novices, yellow for higher dosages and shades of red for concentrations lethal for novices. Supply of red and yellow solutions would require a lab test of blood levels.
Buprenorphine/naloxone subscriptions should be automatically renewable at the pharmacy upon exchange of the old container dated within three days of expected exhaustion. If you got a 30-day prescription today you could get a new prescription in late November by presenting the October 28th dated container and official government ID of the state or your passport.
Let’s not subject our over-18 children to the nasty legal system.

The TV show “The Untouchables” originally ran on TV from about 1959 to 1963. There were a number of characters that held steady jobs and had a heroin addiction, such as a singer and an auto mechanic.
I also wrote about a decade ago:
Dosing of opiates for patients could be done based on hospital blood level tests.
The opiates could be supplied as dilute solutions of codeine or methadone, say the optimal dose per day would be two quarts of solution.
You might pay $20 for the test and $120 for your monthly supply of solution, about 60 quart bottles would be delivered to you personally based on your blood test image.
Perhaps prescription pain relief pills could be replaced by solution to make overdosing harder.
The solution might be dyed a color that would vary by dosage. Potentially lethal dosages might be of a different color entirely.
when my aunt was in her 70’s she was supporting both her sons in their 50’s.
One just would not work, the other blew thru about a million bucks and refused to change his lifestyle.
Why she did this I will never know.
So you have a worthless son hooked on drugs? Just steal the country and he will get all the dope he wants!
When such addictive drugs are legalized, the result is a society strafed with slackers occupying opium dens.
The overpowering effect of say Crack addiction makes it impossible for an addict to hold a steady job. Unlike alcohol, the effects of cocaine addiction linger and do not clear the body in time for work.
Legalizing recreational use of such highly addictive drugs is a threat to society.
My oldest is finishing his undergraduate degree and preparing for law school. He has a plan for his life that includes a career, marriage, family of his own,, etc..
My middle child was diagnosed with an incurable genetic defect that comes with sometimes debilitating symptom surges.
He took e year off between high school and college to get surgery and get the flare ups under control. I told him it was easier when he was young to take time off, than when he is working, paying for a house, etc. He starts college in the fall. He will successfully launch.
My youngest has a different variant of the same condition, as well as Asbergers. He’s extremely smart but socially awkward. He already has a career path chosen in technical writing and programming once he graduates high school. He will probably never fully launch until my husband and I die, or he could surprise us and invent the latest billion dollar gadget. Either way, we expect him to get an education, pay for his car and expenses, and work when he gets older.
There are parents who prepare the path for their children...their offspring don’t mature and expect Mom and Dad to support them.
Then there are parents who prepare their children for the path. Their offspring make it in the world, despite challenges.
Barring a disability or catastrophe, any 50 year old being supported by Mom and Dad is a leach and should be treated as such.
