WaPo “Fact Check” Reveals Sen. Tim Scott’s Ancestors Once Owned Land — So What?

Out of all the things Washington Post “fact-checker” Glenn Kessler to fact-check he chose Republican South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott’s grandfather. Kessler chose to fact-check the only black Republican senator’s grandfather’s history.

Totally not a coincidence Kessler’s piece comes out the day after Scott was chosen to deliver the Republican rebuttal to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union.

Scott has said his grandfather Artis Ware had to drop out of elementary school to pick cotton. He claimed his family went from “cotton to Congress.” You can watch the video of Scott explaining his family history at the bottom of this post.

Kessler pointed out that Scott’s family owned the land because…that’s a controversy? How dare Scott’s family make something of themselves after slavery and during the Great Depression?

The responses to Kessler are gold.....

A lot of people 80 years ago or so left school early to work relatively small plots of lands they owned. They were only a couple steps above subsistence farmers.

Scott's family were hardly privileged.

But no, I guess, Scott's grandfather was some sort of Uncle Tom.

A couple of years ago, I watched one of the shows sponsored by Ancesrty.Com. I don't recall the particular black celebrity, but Henry L. Gates, the famed genealogist, was the featured researcher.

It turned out the celeb had an ancestor who was such a crackerjack blacksmith that his owner allowed him to buy his freedom for a share of his earnings and set him up in a blacksmith shop in Maryland along the National Road (today's US 40 / I-68).

The guy was such a good smithy that he set up other shops along different points on the route and bought the freedom of other slaves to serve as employees and later owner-operators of probably what was the first chain of blacksmith shops in America.

Instead of being proud of his ancestor, the celeb was angry that he owned slaves briefly while they bought their freedom to owner operators.

IOW, some guy who lived in the 1830s was supposed to act more modern.

Hah!

“Owning land” means you’re a rich bourgeoise capitalist pig (er, landowner) with your foot on the neck of every helpess drug user!

“You ain’t black” until you’ve actually owned slaves. Like Harris’s ancestors did.

My ancestors were kicked out of every good country in Europe.

They weren’t kicked out of Lithuatvia, though!

They liked us there!

Nobody could shovel horse crap like my ancestors.

Oh, the horse crap would fly and the young maidens would marvel at our bulging.....biceps.

Following emancipation., hard-working black tenant farmers soon came into ownership of much of the rural land of the south. This was because the tenant farmers paid a percentage of their crop (usually 50 percent) to the landlord. More diligent tenant farmers did well, as did their landlords, and over time amassed enough money to buy land (possibly land other than that they worked as tenant farmers). Jim Crow was instituted to prevent these people from moving up.

See: Robert Higgs, Competition and Coercion: Blacks in the American Economy 1865-1914.

With this article, a member of the white elite of today attacks a black man who has moved up, from out of the poverty and welfare dependency that the white elite have designed to trap the blacks of this country into the most dependable voting block of the Democratic Party.

Mr Hunter’s response is gold: “That black Republican from the Jim Crow South had it easy. But pulling out your driver’s license to vote is oppression.”

“Well we’re moving on up, to the east side-“

“Excuse me, sir, do you vote with the Democrats or will we have to revoke your blackness?”

The comments on the site are very illuminating. As one guy puts it - people have really no idea of how impoverished the South was in the early 20th century. Oh yeah, and I guess Glenn Kessler’s grandfather was actually a Nazi, so not sure he’s qualified to question anyone else’s ancestry.

Owning land is now a crime?

If one is a black Republican, and his ancestors had owned land in the Jim Crow South, yes, owning land is a crime.

They make up the alleged crimes as they go along. Whatever they can come up with for character assassination purposes against the enemies of liberalism will be used. No matter how absurd, the kool aid drinkers will now hold it against Senator Scott that his family had owned land.

Some how they got my Grandfather and my Great-uncle out of Ukraine and into the U.S. Army!

WaPo “Fact Check” Reveals Sen. Tim Scott’s Ancestors Once Owned Land — So What?

His ancestor owned a lot of land because he had a time preference of frugality, and saved most of his income instead of consuming all of it. Eventually he invested in land, worked hard, and was able to save more income. Then he repeated the process over and over again.
