Glock 43X Black: Best Self-Defense Gun For Concealed Carry?
19FortyFive ^ | 4/21/2021 | Caleb Larson

Glock’s Slimlines offer shooters a thinner pistol frame, ideal for shooters with smaller hands or for situations when concealment is a must. This is achieved by using a thinner, 10-round standard magazine. Although a 10-round magazine certainly offers a lower capacity than some of Glock’s standard pistol sizes, it is nearly unparalleled for a subcompact pistol size.

It is worth mentioning too that the 43X is chambered in 9x19mm. Although this is by no means the most powerful handgun cartridge on the market, combined with the 43X’s 10-round magazine capacity, it’s not a bad choice at all.

You need to step it up. ‘19FortyFive’ is giving ‘Am Shooting Journal’ a run for its money.

It is compact and slim, making it more likely to be carried to more places (as they say, a small gun on you is better than a super gun in the safe).

It is also chambered in 9mm, which is important because 1) it is a caliber that is easy to shoot accurately for most people, 2) magazine capacity allows for many rounds to be carried, and 3) modern technology has really made that caliber very effective (modern 9mm hollow points such as the HST show consistent expansion and good penetration).

Combining those points results in a gun that a) is more likely to be carried, b) is a reliable ‘fighting firearm’ that can be counted on to work, and c) is chambered in a very effective caliber when using modern ammunition.

Oh, and it is very affordable ...a VERY important point not because it is easier on the wallet but rather because it means savings can be used where it counts ...

...going to the range and paying for appropriate training.

Result: A firearm that is reliable, is more likely to be carried rather than be left at home, has an effective caliber with modern ammunition, and with training can be counted on to be a proper fighting firearm.

I wonder how it compares to a Sig P365.

The best firearm for self defense (make, model, and caliber) is any properly functional firearm you’re comfortable and have practiced with. Period.

“The Glock 43X has a slightly longer 3.41-inch barrel compared to SIG’s 3.1-inch long barrel. The overall length is where we see a big difference and the Glock 43X is 6.5 inches compared to the P365’s much shorter 5.8 inches. The Glock also weighs 23.07 ounces compared to the lighter P365 which weighs 17.8 ounces. Overall the Glock 43X is a larger and heavier firearm. This can make it easier to handle and shoot. It also has a longer sight radius which can contribute to an easier to shoot gun. However, the SIG’s smaller size makes it easier to carry on a day to day basis.

The big deal with these guns is the fact they are hardly bigger than pocket pistols but on average hold 40% more ammo than a standard handgun. Both guns come with ten-round magazines. The Glock 43X magazines are separate from the Glock 43 and the extended Glock 43 magazines will not function with it.

The primary benefit to the SIG P365 is the ability to utilize 12 and even 15 round magazines. These are SIG OEM magazines and allow for even greater capacity versus the Glock 43X. These magazines do make the gun longer, and heavier, but the increased capacity may be worth it to some.”

What can go wrong?
It is a semi-automatic pistol.

G43X? Not likely. I see Sig Sauer P365 is top dog at the moment.

Springfield XDS was our choice. We got a pair of them on the used market in .45 for less than $800.

They’re our EDC.

Went to the range with my brother a few weeks ago. We each had our latest handgun. Mine: Kimber K6S DASA 4” Combat. His: Sig P365 with Red Dot.

He had five Failure-to-Load or Failure-to-Fire, my revolver had none. That Slap-Tickle-Twitch stuff got old. Now I would guess that the majority of it was operator error, but not all.

I admit I do have a small pistol, a S&W M&P Shield first generation with the Performance shop porting and white tritium night sights. It has always fired and cycled correctly but my chemo-hand nerves make it lower on my list now but with an IWB Alien Gear holster it is an easy rider.

Gonna have to go a long way to beat out my Sig 365XL. Especially in the reliability and longevity categories

This is leaning towards bad mag. My mag that came with my 365XL had to be tuned because of jamming issues once I tuned it, no problem.

My preferred carry is usually my S&W Model 60 (.357) with a larger than standard grip. My main alternative is a Ruger EC9 which has worked without problem so far and is a bit easier to conceal. I’d like to try a Sig 365 someday. For home defense, my Beretta 92 is nice pointing, has a long barrel and is reliable. I like DA/SA coming from a revolver background.

As an owner of a 43X, and at 6’3” with big hands, this pistol is awesome. It is only 9+1, but it is super thin, lightweight, perfectly balanced, and all my fingers wrap around the grip and it feels oh so good in your hands. There is no safety so if you keep it chambered you need to exercise some caution when handling.

Great 9mm!

Be sure to hold and examine the new Kimber revolvers. They are slim and very nice. I ordered my 4” from a Kimber dealer and had it in less than 4 weeks. The 3” and snobbies are similar but the snub nosed has a shrouded trigger so is only DA. They feel almost a slim as a pistol. I carry 357 in it but practice with 38 most of the time.

Glock triggers feel like a rubber band breaking on a cheap toy.

Springfield striker fired weapons feel like tuned match shooting triggers on hammer/sear pistols.

Good reliable firearm, and a good choice. What’s your carry round? Doesn’t matter much though since most modern ammo is generally good.

As an aside, glad that you train with it. Many people buy firearms but don’t train. It’s especially important to go for a proper class where various scenarios are tested. It is also important to train as well on using a torniquet (and carry one).

In my case, I carry a Glock 17 plus extra mags. It’s a full size pistol, but I can conceal carry it. Magazine in the firearm has 16+1 (I download one and prefer not to do 17+1) of 147gr Gold Dot; first additional magazine is an extended capacity 20-rounder with 147gr HST (my favorite round, and the only reason the magazine in the gun has Gold Dot is because they are bonded and I may be shooting out of a vehicle), and the second extended capacity additional magazine has 20 to 127+P+ Winchester Ranger T.

That’s my minimal carry when I’m home.

Train every weekend with first response/SWAT teams, plus regularly compete IDPA and trying to get into IPSC.
