Millions refuse to work

The sign in the McDonald's showed what is wrong with society today. The sign read, "We are short-staffed. Please be patient with the staff that did not show up. No one wants to work anymore."

Not only do people not want to go to work, they resent having to wait for their food because the McDonald's is understaffed. Pigs have better manners.

The Sun story said, "Workers in the hospitality industry have been concerned about their own health and safety in the work place."

That was a nice try to sugar-coat the pill, but the truth is millions of Americans who should be working are being paid to sit at home and do nothing but play video games.

In 15 months we have gone from the greatest economy in American history to this Zoom world where no one seems to wear pants anymore.

In Chicago, 6,585 schoolteachers voted against re-opening schools.

Negotiations with the teachers union and not science determined whether schools would re-open.

NBC reported, "The union said 13,681 members voted to approve the agreement and 6,585 voted against it. In a statement, the union described the agreement as the 'absolute limit to which CPS [Chicago Public Schools] was willing to go at the bargaining table to guarantee a minimum number of guardrails for any semblance of safety in schools.' "

At least one-third of Chicago teachers do not wish to work. Covid-19 is a good excuse.

Once upon a time, students played hooky. Now teachers do.

In another story, NBC reported, "The number of job vacancies soared to nearly 15 million by mid-March, but discouraged, hesitant and fearful job seekers means many positions are still unfilled, according to new data from online job site ZipRecruiter.

"Online job postings plunged from 10 million before the start of the pandemic last year to just below 6 million last May, as lockdowns and shutdown orders forced businesses to close their doors and reduce or lay off workers.

"Now, as vaccinations increase and companies are again able to make projections, they’re staffing up to capture booming demand, with the number of open positions across all online listings soaring 5 million above the pandemic’s start."

Discouraged workers?

They just want to play video games all morning, and then go to McDonald's and complain about slow service because the joint is understaffed.

A family member owns four fast food restaurants. She is having a tough time staffing them. As the articles no one wants to work, even those who say they do.

I went to a business office last month.
Sign in the window said “New Covid-19 Office Hours: Whenever we feel like it”.

I went out to a couple of sit down restaurants recently. The service was very slow, and it appeared that just a couple of people were working. The number of customers was small, but even so, service was very slow. I suspect there was a shortage of hired help in the kitchen as well in the front of the house.

while no doubt it’s about money..

do you want to work all day in a mask with plastic gloves on all day?

I don’t, I won’t. but I don’t work for fast food. I work for me.

Chicago teachers want to stay off the job, and get paid their regular salaries? They are no longer teachers then. Why do Chicago parents need to pay taxes for nothing, as their children are being denied even the substandard education they normally get. Fire them all, every single striking teacher, and administrators also. They are responsible for all of this. They will be gone. What difference will it make if they are? Hire new teachers with the money that is saved. Problem solved.

Sorry to say, if I were a school teacher I wouldn’t want to work either. Even when I was in school I thought there was something wrong with a grown up who wants to spend decades with 13 year old kids.

I’m sure there are some great teachers, I had several. But as ever the 80:20 rule applies.

Nice cartoon btw. Perfect metaphor.

NOBODY wants to work in a mask all day. I stay outta places that I am required to wear a mask for more than a few minutes. Forget browing or window shopping indoors.

Really haven’t noticed. I live in Virginia, where nobody wanted to work anyway. The McDonald’s that is slow in 2021 was just as slow in 2019.

Good question. The school superintendent? Votes by the Board of Education?

Remember how Reagan fired the air traffic controllers? I suspect nobody in Chicago who could do so, wants to get into a situation of dismissing teachers.

Same around here, a nominally conservative area.

All the FF places and sit-down restaurants have Help Wanted in the window or on street signs.

Many other places as well.....................

A very nice Christian woman runs a small local restaurant and she constantly has staff that flakes off and won’t work, it’s killing her business and wrecking her.

Not just hospitality workers.. had a guy give me an estimate on a concrete patio.. same on that did my asphalt driveway. Said he had to close the asphalt side down because he couldn’t hire any workers.. they all stay home, get unemployment and their stimulus checks and won’t work.

Sad day in hell for this country.

Yep.

I am going through a head hunting company for production workers. Which is good because they are typically motivated to work.

Paying above the area norm to, but about half are begging to be laid off so they can not work.

Moot point in a few months if the supply issues don’t smooth out, and TX is going dark, again.

People are too lazy collecting unemployment and watching Netflix all day.

There’s a McDonald’s by us in Spring Hill, FL dealing with the same situation. And is it me or does it seem to be SOP for fast food employees to intentionally mess up orders so they can get fired and be eligible for unemployment and fake a disability or two to collect the govt “crazy bucks” and live off us taxpaying schmucks? Kinda feels like being the only one at the poker table who’s not cheating.🤬

Who can fire them? No one had the stones up until now. The Springfield Democrats are really beginning to oppose Lightfoot, as she is failing in even minor aspects of governance in Chicago due to her total incompetence. Things will have to get much worse for anything to happen. The deteriorating overall situation will probably overshadow this controversy anyway, and much more dire events will take place. Like the burning down of most of what is left of Chicago.

We go to a wonderful Brazilian Steakhouse here in MD about once a month...
It has excellent service and food...

Generally multiple servers constantly checking your table... All can speak good English and very polite...

Very expensive and always wise to get reservations a day ahead of time...

OTOH, we refer to most of the nearby Mickey D’s here as Mickey’s Spittoons...
